I’m not sure how Os Guinness pulled off writing the book of the hour while at the same time giving us one for many generations to come, but in Last Call for Liberty he has done that very thing. He says so much to our generation, yet it will be the words that will be needed in a hundred years. At least if there’s any liberty left to cultivate and protect at that point. What is equally amazing is how he did it. There’s only a little of Trump or Obama, and even less of Republican or Democrat. He would have us stop drowning in the latest election cycle, or even the latest 24-hr news cycle. Our problems are more fundamental than the latest round of lunacy. His perspective spans the horizon. He looks at where we are, how we got here (since the 1960s at least), and where we are going. He holds us accountable to what freedom is and what it is not. He calls on us to embrace anew the precious gift of freedom or our twisting of freedom will be our destruction.Guinness paints his portrait with the colors of the American Revolution of 1776 and the French Revolution of 1789. That comparison explains so much. I’ve always loved reading about that time period, so I’m a little ashamed I never saw this dichotomy before. How freedom was both approached and defined is why one of those revolutions has held for 200 plus years while the other is a historical footnote. Still, he isn’t giving us a historical survey. No, the problem is that much of America today has switched from 1776 to 1789 in their guiding of our nation. Peril awaits. That’s not to say that this book is depressing. It’s like a teacher who believes in your intellect and boldly makes a case that assumes your ability to comprehend. He never talks down but sounds like he speaks to peers who will see what he’s saying when they face the logic. He comes across as positive there’s hope and all that’s missing is for us to slow down and carefully analyze the facts. You will, without doubt, get some of the most perceptive analysis of the trends and events that define us today. He never comes across as shouting “this is wrong” as much as “here’s what’s behind certain behaviors and why they will hurt us all”. He never yells at us for assaulting freedom. It’s more of a proclamation that freedom is one of the greatest things that God has given us and it’s worth hanging on to.I’m not going to give a chapter-by-chapter overview in this review. Just jump in and you will see things that perhaps you’ve never thought before and that now you see as the natural, unanswerable explanation of our turbulent nation. This book, if ingested by our nation, would revolutionize us all, or at least take us back to the beautiful place we began. Labeling a book as a “must-read” is trite, but read it and see if that isn’t exactly what you’d say.

Mr.Guinness writes so fluently and makes connections that help readers to comprehendthe present turmoil in America. He compares the French Revolution and AmericanRevolution which had different approaches to Freedom. Freedom from but not Freedom toconstructive values most often leads to irresponsible and destructive outcomes. He affirmsthe need for virtuous values and a covenantal relationship with firm roots of goodness andtruth. His analysis of America's past relates to the present issues and the future destiny of Freedom inAmerica. A Stunning and knowledgeable read to savor and take quotes from his remarkable passages of lucid explanation.relationship to

Os pared out the difference between the 1776 American revolution and the 1789 French revolution and why it's important to stay the course with 1776.

Great philosophy book. Paints a picture of our heritage and a future.

Is our country going down the tubes? If so, then how fast and have we reached the point of no return? Os Guinness’ latest book, “Last Call For Liberty”, is a clarion call for Americans to learn how our past is affecting our today. Writing from an admittingly Christian perspective, the author convincingly states that our freedom ultimately come not from the Declaration of Independence or the US Constitution, but from God releasing the Jews from Egyptian bondage first and secondly giving the laws that came down from Mt. Sinai in the biblical Book of Exodus.Guinness writes in his customary thought-provoking style and covers such topics as:1. Where our freedoms ultimately come from.2. While we have many freedoms, we must also exercise great responsibility and restraint so we do not abuse our liberties that can ultimately ruin us.3. Making the world safe for differing viewpoints and true tolerance for differing opinions.4. Types of government for liberty.5. Definition of freedom and how we can sustain it in responsible ways.Well-written and requiring much focus and patience, the read is sure to either reinforce or challenge existing thoughts and views about liberty. A timely read in today’s chaotic and stress-filled political and cultural times. Look forward to reading more deeply and slowly in the future. I was given a review copy by IVP Books and appreciate the opportunity to read and review.

Buy it, very enjoyable,

#22,003 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Dorothea Benton Frank is my go-to-author for a nice summer read. Her books take place in Charleston, SC for the most part and this is an area I know fairly well. Every story she writes has good characters, strong families and happy endings. This particular book was the author's first book. I had read other of her books and decided to start at the beginning. The main character is Susan who unexpectedly finds herself divorced, a single mother. The story moves back and forth between 1960's and past times, focusing on her dysfunctional childhood and changes forced upon her as an adult. There is humor and hope and everyone needs a Sullivan Island in their lives.

I met the great author/speaker but the book is not what I expected! Can't they write anything in the 21st century that's G rated?

This is the first book in Lowcountry Tales and it will leave you ready to pick up the second one. Susan is trying to get over the break up of her marriage with her husband Tom who was unfaithful with a much younger female. Sullivan's Island on South Carolina shore is where she takes her teenage daughter to try to start a new life. It was here that she grew up and has nothing but wonderful memories of those days. Little has chanced including her feelings for her very first boyfriend. Susan seems to have gotten her life back on track only to have her ex-husband contact her with news that he has cancer and his younger lover left him. He pleads for Susan's help as he starts chemo. The characters are all so believable and will remind the reader of their growing up days. Livvie, the house keeper was my favorite. She keeps everyone "in line" with her wisdom and humor. I am reading the second book in this series now and it is proving to be just as enjoyable as this one. I do love this author!

Susan's husband cheats on her and in the end they become friends. Susan cusses and swears as a youngster but as a mother scolds her daughter when she even says, "Oh God! " Her father puts his life on the line fighting for Civil rights but beats his children and cheats on his wife. So many ironies.I loved Livvie, the black woman who saved Susan's family and filled her with love and truth.I recognized my own childhood in the author's nostalgia, and I did not grow up on the South.Thank you for highlighting those times. I was afraid they'd be forgotten forever.I gave the book 4 stars, which is good considering the quantity of great books out thereOnly God is perfect.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. It wasn't badly written, and I always enjoy the colloquial touch (being a born-and-bred Southerner myself), but there were times when the story drug and/or got convoluted with the addition of other plot points. The story isn't bad - don't get me wrong: the "coming of age" of the main character is full of those flashbacks that evoke rage and sadness - most Southern stories seem to be replete with such. It's just not what I was hoping for. Sadly, I thought I would enjoy the series and ordered five of them, after having only read an excerpt from one of Frank's later books.. Sigh...off to donate them.

I have read and reread SULLIVAN'S ISLAND and each time, I enjoy it more and more. Dorothea Benton Frank is one of my favorite authors, and in the dreary days of winter in the Northeast, I pick up one of her lowcountry tales and forget about freezing! Her wit, humor, and uncanny way of visiting the past, and presenting what is happening currently entertains in every chapter. So, put on your villager clothes and bass weejins, pick up a copy of SULLIVAN'S ISLAND and enjoy the spendor of living the life in the low country!!!

Having read and enjoyed one of Frank's books last summer (Shem Creek), I thought I'd give this one a try. I'm a classics and sci-fi sort of gal most of the time, but once in a blue moon I like to pick up some mindless eye-candy. You know: one of those fun novels that is terribly predictable, with a low-readability level but high-interest. Anyway, I liked the first novel I mentioned, but this one was a huge disappointment. The characters are not imaginative and the plot is just weird. There's really nothing about the heroine to like as she's a crappy mom, a needy sibling, and incredibly weak as an adult. I kept waiting for inner strength to crop up or kick in, but it never did. After the painful description of her hookup with a man she barely knew, I just abandoned the book and deleted it from my kindle. I decided to read F. Scott Fitzgerald instead; now there's a writer who knew how to put together a plot with tragic yet engaging characters.

There were a lot of "flaws" with this book such as 1)the heroine is a really unpleasant pushy sort of person whom everyone loved SO much. Hard to believe that anyone would love her, let alone everyone. 2)Getting through and over a really horrendous marital situation was all peachy in a record breaking short time - I mean people DO get over betrayals but normally it takes a bit longer and 3)one minute she was very adult and the next moment acted like a child 4) the relationship with her daughter did not ring one speck true. Having said all that, the book is a fun, light read if you suspend logical thinking which is usually a prerequisite for this type of book. Perfect reading for a relaxing evening.
