Pompeii -- Buried Alive! (Step into Reading), by Edith Kunhardt

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3 A flawed attempt at conveying a complex historical subject to inexperienced readers. Information about Pompeii is conveyed in one long narrative arbitrarily divided into three chapters. There is a brief description of what a volcano is and how it works, followed by a fictionalized account of what the people in Pompeii were doing on the day of the eruption and what happened to the inhabitants when Vesuvius blew up. The final chapter gives some information about the rediscovery of Pompeii and its excavation by archaeologists. In an attempt to simplify the ideas in the book, Kunhardt has oversimplified the prose. Sentences are choppyalmost joltingand reminiscent of a basal reader. Pronunciation guides are given in the text in a jarring manner: ``These pictures are called mosaics. Say: mo-ZAY-iks.'' The cartoonlike illustrations are colorful and attractive, but they are not clearly drawn or labeled. This book doesn't work as a picture book or as nonfiction. Libraries would do better to wait for better quality easy history books to come along. Ellen Loughran, Brooklyn Public Lib .Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I'm going to go against the main stream of opinion here. Seriously...what age group were they aiming at? This book is written to a 5 year old, but it goes into great detail about people burning to death.I've enjoyed the Step Into Reading series as it has been a DK light for some interesting topics, sort of like a mini-encyclopedia on the topic with good pics that is appropriate for a wide range of ages. But this is a story that has to be read, and it is a scary story for little people. However, the facts and details are presented in a "baby" form that will not appeal to an older child who is curious about the science.I afterschool tutor and stock my shelves with quick reference books, but sadly, this book will collect dust on my shelf or be tossed in the bin. This is NOT a good reference for chilidren for Pompeii.

Well written. My 5 year old is into volcanoes and he found this book engaging, with just the right amount of text and detailed illustrations. The only thing that's really scary for someone that young is how archaeologists poured plaster into these strange holes at Pompeii and discovered that the holes were negative space created by corpses that had rotted away slowly after sediments/lava had accumulated. There's only 1 page of that. Otherwise, a good read. Would recommend for a young avid reader who can puzzle through it by him/herself.

Wonderful for a volcano-loving new 1st grader. A good level for autumn in 1st grade for a medium speed reader.Besides teaching the kids history and a bit on volcanoes, the book is a good conversation starter on the Roman empire, volcanoes, living in a dangerous area (like San Francisco) and slavery. The school likes to make my kid read Clifford the red dog and similar happy but slightly nonsense stories. I like that this book gives the kids a chance to reflect on how their life is compared to the people of Pompeii. Why were people willing to take the risk of living on a volcano? YES - we read it a lot

My five year-old LOVES this book! I especially appreciate the simple, clear discussion of the science involved in volcanoes. I read it to my son's kindergarten class and it seemed like about 85% of the kids loved it and 15% were scared. Note: the book does detail the loss of human life, including showing depictions of dead bodies. It doesn't bother my son at all, but it might bother a sensitive kid.

My 2nd grader loves most anything non-fiction and these style books are perfect for him to read alone and challenge himself while exploring or we can read them together so we can have some dialogue along the way. These Step into Reading leveled books offer a lot of topics that are sure to have you find a topic to interest your child. This one fits great for the history buff child.

And so do adults, I bought this for my grandson's , I had actually visited Pompeii because as a young child I had heard all the stories. When we talked about volcano's and I explained what I had seen and know, the boys immediately wanted a story about it.Being a former children's librarian, I know little people like the real fact's not just stories. Even reluctant reader will listen to a book filled with facts about the subject they love. It was the right answer to many questions

Except for the fact that this book doesn't cover all the Pompeian’s who DID heed the warning signs that Vesuvius was about to blow (the majority of the estimated population of 10,000 to 15,000) I use it as a creative writing prompt for students up to 5th grade. It has plenty of sensory details and images of everyday life back then. After I read it, I ask students to write a first-person POV account of the day before the eruption. Especially inspiring because archeological discoveries dove-tail with Roman historian Pliny the Younger's written account, encouraging them to view journal writing as a form of history..

Believe it or not but this has been my 6 year old's book for all times . Of the pile of books she reads out loud to me every day ,she always includes this book and understands it better every time when we discuss what she want to from the book.

This book - broken down into short chapters that focus on "ordinary" Americans who committed a range of criminal acts - reminded me of the 70s and 80s, when there were a plethora of non-fiction books released about notorious Americans doing bad deeds. Back then I gorged on books like Robert Lindsey's "Falcon and the Snowman," Mark Baker's "Cops," Joe McGinniss' "Fatal Vision" and the Ann Rule true crime books.Eric Brach now joins the pantheon of these writers' work with "Double Lives," a compelling and totally readable exploration of why certain people in our very own neighborhoods do the horrible things they do. Spanning the 20th century and into the 21st (in locales from CA to TX to NJ), these individual stories of menace and mayhem track the criminals from their (mostly) humble backgrounds and lower- to middle-class adulthood when the troubles bloomed. Little-known offenders like arsonist John Leonard Orr to famous perpetrators of evil like the BTK killer and child molester/congressman Dennis Hastert are profiled; Brach breaks down their lives, their seeming normalcy, and their horrific crimes - as well as the aftermath and their eventual capture. In writing about these past crimes - instead of about current, unsolved horrors - the writer has the ability to allay some of the readers' fears of these "next-door" criminals by closing the circuit on them and concluding each chapter with their capture and prison sentences. None of the criminals get away with their crimes, and all are punished and put away so that the public can sleep just a little better knowing they no longer roam our streets our our neighborhoods. The writer also makes the curious - but ultimately successful - choice of bringing his own personal history into the mix. Brach does this from the very beginning, explaining his interest in the subject of destruction and self-destruction by relating brief stories of the people he knows who have died. In the Introduction, and in two separate chapters, he inserts himself into the book with these stories of loss and addiction. In the two "Evan" chapters, he deals with his struggles of having consciously avoided contact with his childhood friend later in life, when the boy he met in Jr. High was now a man who had been in and out of rehab for serious drug addiction. It's a raw admission from a writer still conflicted about his own actions - and inaction - with regard to someone he considered a best friend in high school to a person who scared him enough to even skip his funeral. These two chapters actually give the other chapters - and the other stories of criminals the writer has never met but has only researched - more resonance, and humanizes even the most horrific of these criminals by reminding us that these people could have been our neighbors, our co-workers, our classmates, or even our friends. Besides the fact that these bite-sized stories about the evil that lurks in the hearts and minds of men (and women) are engrossing and entertaining, these tales also generate our compassion for the criminals and the idea that if they had shared their demons with someone else, perhaps these crimes may have been stopped ... or never committed in the first place. In our current age of social media and oversharing, perhaps there are future crimes against humanity that may be shared and stopped before they even occur. It's our job as good citizens and neighbors to look for the clues from these people out to do harm (and self-harm) and reach out to them before they can destroy themselves or others.

I've always been a fan of Law and Order and Forensic Files and was familiar with a few of the stories that were included in this novel. However, watching those shows, I didn't really get the sense that these criminals were living among us. These highly engaging stories give you a better sense of the psyche of these criminals and the realization that these aren't fictional characters far, far away. These are actually real life friends, family or neighbors who may be living right next door. I also really liked how the author Eric Brach weaved in personal stories about people he knew from childhood who had become criminals later on in life. Overall, this was a very fascinating read, and I would highly recommend it to anyone! I'm looking forward to the next installment.

I am loving this book! It includes captivating stories about undercover villains, as well as engaging, relevant & relatable tales from the writer's own life. Double Lives is easy to read and hard to put down. I'd recommend it to your book club to broach conversations regarding your neighbor's every move.

I've enjoyed reading many books over the years about horrible people, but this one is so unique. The way the facts are interwoven with the short story format and the writer's entertaining voice is perfect! Sometimes I feel a little guilty about being so entertained by true crime, but then I remember I'm a human being and this stuff is just downright fascinating. I'm not even kidding when I say I read the entire bibliography to find out where I can learn even more about these terrible people.

This book made me suspicious of my neighbors, whom I am now convinced are murderers. But seriously, well-written, easy to read, engaging true stories of seemingly normal people who are anything but. Highly recommended

Eric Brach has the unique ability to vividly describe harrowing events and pathological human behaviorin a compelling and readable fashion. He shows that the depths of depravity can be hiddenin seemingly normal people. This frightening combination makes this an outstanding read whichyou will not want to put down. I highly recommend this book and look forward to thisauthor’s next work Any of these stories would make a great movie . Hollywood take notice.

There are stories in this great collection of people doing truly heinous things. True crime is not usually my genre, but I was drawn in by the way Eric Brach presents portraits of criminals and their acts. The book made me think differently about crime. Who are the people in our midst who brazenly break the law, and why do they do it? Why do we law-abiding bystanders miss the signs of their criminality? This was a very interesting and engaging read. Get yourself a copy!

I'm a sucker for a series of short stories that follow a strong theme. This the first time I've read true crime in this format, but I love it! The stories are easy to get into, but gripping and chilling. The writing is terrific, balancing hard facts with wonderful narrative. You can imagine these monsters as your neighbors, which is truly terrifying. Highly recommended!

This is a great book that is organized well for reference and supplies sufficient detail to get where you are going and make the most of the trip. Of the three similar books we purchased, this is our second favorite (as beginners), but I expect this will end up being the most used over the years.

30 great paddles in Eastern Virginia are thoroughly described. If you paddle in this part of the world this is a must have reference. The author's detailed accounts give a clear understanding of what to expect along the way. Highly recommended.

Thanks.

Sea Kayaking Maryland's Chesapeake Bay: Day Trips on the Tidal Tributaries and Coastlines of the Western and Eastern Shoreby Michael Savario and Andrea NolanandSea Kayaking Virginia: A Paddler's Guide to Day Trips from Georgetown to Chincoteague by Andrea NolanSavario and Nolan are professional guides who have written two delightful guidebooks for kayak day trips in the area of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The books document trips the authors have made a regular part of their itinerary and are written in a narrative style that is not only informative but makes for a great armchair tour for those nasty winter days as well. I found both these books at my local library and liked them so well they had to become part of my personal library. Enjoy!

This book is fantastic! It was helpful when planning routes, deciding where to put in -- Nolan knows all the best spots -- but I also found myself reading descriptions of trips I didn't plan on taking, because the author really knows how to tell a story. It's hard to find a guide book that's savvy with relevant information but well written too. Probably the best I've ever found.

Do not buy the Kindle version of the book. The text print is so small that I cannot magnify enough to be readable. Can't tell you how good the content of the book is because I cannot read it. This sucks because I cannot find a way to get Amazon to refund my money so that I could buy the hard copy of this book. Does anybody preview these Kindle books before they are offered for sale? This is not the first Kindle edition that I have purchased that Sucks, not because of the content but because of the presentation. Beware of Kindle!

When building AK's everything you could ever want to know is on the internet somewhere. I got tired of hunting down what I needed, so I bought this as a reference. It's super handy to keep on my bench for quick reference.

given as gift. Well received. Cover was slightly creased upon arrival, but it appeared to be a fault of the shipping method (a bunch of Amazon items tossed randomly in box) than a defect.

The kindle book doesn't allow for font sizing, and requires zoom and pan to use. A more serious shortcoming is that every technique presented here calls for another specialty jig or fixture. No alternate methods are considered.

AWESOME book. I have 2 ak builder books, and the images in this one are amazing. Super descriptive, very detailed, and easy to follow writing. I would recommend this to anyone looking to build an akm.

Informative book but I would not recommend getting the e-book version as it was not converted well. Constantly zooming in and out, scrolling left and right drove me crazy after an hour.

this book has all the information it it to help you build an ak47/ak74. I have built two of them so far. When I first got this book I didn't realize there was that many steps to build one rifle. It was all really easy to under stand. I highly recommend getting this book if you are building your first ak47/74.

Excellent book with very clear and concise instructions. The illustrations were top notch.

The Edge of the Abyss, by Emily Skrutskie

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up—Cassandra Leung has become an official member of Santa Selena's crew. She abandoned her sea monster (a Reckoner), lost her family, and was deceived by Swift, the one person she trusted. Now she must find her place in this world of pirates. Cas learns that there are many Reckoners that were stolen and are now demolishing the ecosystem of the ocean, and all the pirates look to her for a solution. They must destroy the illegal Reckoners to save the sea. To do so, Cas must learn to rely on all those she has lost throughout this journey. She must accept that she will have to kill those she was raised to protect. And she must decide whose side she is on once and for all. Skrutskie's sequel to The Abyss Surrounds Us is just as engaging as its predecessor. It introduces pirates as a group who work together to protect their life force, the ocean, after being turned away from society. Just like Cas, the audience will struggle as they wonder whom they should support. Readers will love this sci-fi adventure story. VERDICT Purchase where the first novel and sci-fi are popular.—Jessica Strefling, US Court of Appeals, Federal Circuit Library

#102,395 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Edge of the Abyss is the kind of sequel that really depends on the previous book to enjoy. I loved the premise with The Abyss that surrounds us, fun depictions of pirates and a lot of differing motivations driving characters to their actions. My intention to read the sequel came as soon as I finished the first book. Every author will quote the saying that narratives should be the master of the author and not the other way around. In a nutshell what this means is that the author should allow the story that develops to lead the way rather than trying to force that story back into whatever box it crawled out of. All authors say it, but do they all do it? This question is the biggest one to answer with Edge of the Abyss, as it seeks to grow from the source material and grow on it. Here is my review. There was a lot going on in the previous book and if you have not read it, stop now and read it. The book is excellent, but also this book is nothing without it. Writing a direct sequel that highly depends on the previous work is a sketchy proposition because you’re cutting your possible readership by the people who have already read your first one. A truly good second book will backfill you and be satisfying as a stand-alone. This book does try to backfill you, but it feels like a messy and incomplete attempt and the payoffs are instantly call backs to the first book, so much so that they would have no impact, rather they would have negative impact if you didn’t read the first book. The reason the payoffs detract on their own is because book two has hooks, but these hooks are not call backs, they’re new hooks, new friends (or rather further development of old friends that were left kind of shallow in book one). This promise of learning about Lemon, for example is a great first hook and the book practically begs the author to dedicate time here. Instead? Back to Swift, our supporting lead from book one. Yes this already answers the above question, the author is not a slave to her narrative, she doesn’t let the book develop how it feels organically rather dives right back into the previous volume’s plotlines. For those who did not read the previous volume, spending time with Swift, undeveloped in book two, is going to feel really dull, in fact pointless. All of the chemistry and depth comes out of the first book for these two characters. What about these other people we’ve been speaking to up till now? An unresolved relationship which ended poorly is a great hook, almost no one does this. It would have taken courage, and the author would have been forging something exciting and interesting, plus it felt more natural than where the book goes almost right away. Every moment the author plays with the possibility of conflict it falls into the familiar and tired tracks of every other YA book ever. It turns out bad romance knows not sexual orientation, it is very much equal opportunity. The lengths and efforts this book goes to introduce conflict between Swift and Cas is cringe inducing. There were so many organic opportunities, like making either, or both of them move on, or actually developing others, that the fact it doesn’t is really disappointing. Were the book willing to not focus on that relationship so heavy handed it could of ironically made that relationship better to read about and feel more realistic and less author forced. One of the things that made book one so good, was that the world seemed to care about balance. When one shift occurred, it was reflected in other parts such as the reckoner a pirate ship may have. Since you cannot enjoy book two without really having read book one, it seems fair to judge them together and this time the world does not really work quite so well in concert. The big plot about this book is what will happen with feral reckoners, but the book pretends this problem belongs entirely to the main cast and their friends, rather than treating it as a world wide problem like the first book does. Sure they call it worldwide, but then were are the big major powers trying to fix it this time? How come we only have the rag tag bunch dealing with it and not a much better funded and organized. This isn’t to say none of the genius of the previous book comes through into this one. For instance, when the pirates come into the bigger picture and alliances are shown, it seems reminiscent of nobility with marriages and hostages and wards. This portion, though short, was quite interesting and could have been expounded on greatly. The whole section brings more questions than anything, who are the officers and what happens to them when they go to the ships they are supposed to serve on, are all, most or many of the pirates trained this way and if so, why aren’t the veterans who aren’t supposed to succeed the ship better regarded, even given names? The fleeting brilliance is short lived as a character utters a “Merry Christmas” for no reason in the middle of a tense situation. The romance is the plot in this book that just won’t die. No matter how big the city or unlikely the circumstances, our main will always run into the romantic lead. There are so many better narratives that could have come about from denying this story line or altering it, but you can see it a mile away, deus ex machina moments are constant. Conflict between the two mains drives the story, but the conflict is far and away the worse parts. None of it feels organic to the characters, nor the plot, rather it feels like the author had something in mind, or a formula they wanted to use no matter how well it fit with the narrative. In the end, with all that goes on in this book, the most poignant feeling is missed opportunity. Perhaps the length was too short, or too much devoted to one thing and amazing not enough at the same time. The what will Cas become plot, doesn’t have enough time to mature due to the move over romance plot. The Reckoners in the ocean plot doesn’t have the fully thought out attention needed thanks to the move over romance plot. The move over romance plot is also rushed, in the haste to keep things a simmering hot rather than let them develop naturally, the plot that stalls the rest of the book from greatness also stumbles and none of the resulting storylines feel fully fleshed out. The first book was worthy of praise and love, but this book feels more like an attempt to milk that praise and love without putting fourth the same level of effort or shine as the predecessor. The review may sound harsh, but since this book leans so heavily on the foundation of the first, it impossible not to measure it against that book. The first was brilliant, full of ambiguity and moral grey and a lot of new ideas and concepts, it was an ocean of possibilities, this book by contrast feels like a specter of the genius. The author responsible for this book is great, it would be tragic to ignore her works, but this book may have been too rushed, too truncated to truly demonstrate her talent.

Pirates and ninjas are staples of adventure novels and I honestly thought there wasn't much one could do with them. But Emily Skrustkie takes has an innovative look at this old trope, adds in some giant sea monsters and hey presto! she's come up with an excellent series. Cas Leung is an imperfect heroine, surrounded by broken people and one nonetheless roots for her to find a path through uncharted and unchartable waters of piracy and politics and human relationships.Cas' relationship with Swift is rocky and realistic and the fact that they are both women is never the issue. They have to deal with a lot of issues between and round them, but that one thing is never part of the conflict, which is appealing.I'd recommend this especially to YA readers looking for female leads with active roles in adventure settings *not* set in a dystopia.

I'm really excited that this book wasn't a huge disappointment. Usually sequels, especially ones that might not have initially been planned, fall a bit flat in comparison to the first one. I've read sequels where the characters don't quite seem like the same people, and sometimes the plots are a stretch and desperate grab for anything even remotely as interesting as the first plot line. This book was definitely entertaining and had a lot of its own strengths that kept it as amazing as the first. If you read the first book and enjoyed it, then you definitely won't be disappointed by this one!!

This one felt a little more rushed compared to the first novel in the duology. I think the ending needed a bit more work as it came across as an ending-of-convenience rather than earned.

Complicated and exciting. This book, along with its predecessor, are two of my favorite SFF books out there.

If you loved the first book, you need to read this sequel. It expands the world so well and we get to know so much more about what the earth looks like - plus, of course, so much more Cas and Swift. The ending was really satisfying, it leaves you wanting more but there's no annoying cliffhanger either. I really don't want to give away too much but please trust me, if you like TASU, you're going to like this.

I'm a slow reader and have trouble finishing books, but I read this and The Abyss Surrounds us in four days total--I couldn't stop reading! These two are definitely new favorites!

Fun read. Must read the first book to grasp this one

The book clearly demonstrates the amazing contribution, even by today's standards, of Sarasohn's contemporary thinking about the role of Statistical Quality Control in the broader context of Quality Management.
