Absolutely fantastic. A must-read for web designers and front-end developers. It's packed with actionable ideas and techniques, many of which I'd never seen before. (Context: I've been a web developer since 1999ish, co-created the Django web framework and have been wrestling with CSS for 15 years or so.)Each chapter presents a specific web design "problem," along with a CSS solution (and sometimes multiple solutions). Some are simple, others are quite complex. Many are quite clever and will make you think of CSS differently. It's well-written and beautifully designed, with full-color pages and tons of informative footnotes.The best part is that Lea talks through her thought process in developing each technique, "teaching a man to fish." In that sense, this book is great on two levels: it'll teach you specific techniques, and it'll teach you how to think when developing your *own* techniques for future web design problems.

I rarely leave product reviews, but I had to in this case in the hope the author may see this. THANK YOU SO MUCH.I've had an annoying UI bug that I've spent hours on and once my solutions started getting most heinous I decided to live with it instead of writing ungodly amounts of code for something that should be resolved with 1 line of css. For a separate issue a coworker recommended this book. (I couldn't wrap my head around how some css shapes are defined, the math involved etc.) While browsing chapters I found chapter 7, the section titled "Taming table column widths", and it changed my life. It had a great explanation on what the problem was with pictures and diagrams of exactly the issue I was seeing and also the solution had a similar explanation and picture of how the css property fixes the issue (More so the ramifications of the fix.)The book itself is a piece of art. It has been a joy browsing through the well laid out sections, beautiful typography, and helpful graphics. I have to recommend this book to anyone who does any amount of web design. There is a treasure trove of information in here that no amount of bing/google can compare. 5/5 - would buy again.

Lea Verou's CSS Secrets reminds me a bit of Dan Cedarholm's Bullet-Proof CSS from the early days of "Web 2.0," -- in the sense that it not only teaches you approaches for solving common problems, but in the process it revisits some CSS basics and can serve to "backfill" on concepts you may have skimmed over when you first started using them (margin collapse, anyone?).CSS Secrets walks through a series of techniques in detail, with notes on the principles behind the tricks, and information on cross-browser compatibility. Most of the techniques offer multiple alternate approaches, each with their own pros, cons and tradeoffs.Dense with great tips and valuable techniques for the working designer/front-end developer, with best practices upfront and peppered throughout. Too much to absorb in the first read-through--I suspect I will come back to this book frequently for a long time to come.

One of the five books I keep within arm's reach at all times while I'm working.This is an excellent book. It's very well written, has great examples, and is easy to read.Lea does a very good job communicating how to use some of the newfangled "CSS Tricks" in very real and practical ways. I've used much of what she's written in here in real projects for real clients. This isn't just some, "look at what CSS can do" kind of book. It offers good advice for how to use the latest features of CSS in a good way.

Lea is a CSS magician & a Font-end Wizard. She has amazed the world with possibilities of HTML5, CSS, and SVG through her "CSS Secrets Talks". She is also an invited Expert in CSS Working Group.With this book, she pushes the boundaries of what could be possible with simple CSS properties.The Book starts with how the CSS standards are developed. Then, Lea goes on to reveal 32 CSS secrets spread across 47 chapters. Although some chapters do require a prerequisite (sometimes another chapter from the same book),the chapters can be read in a non-linear way.The book focusses on the possibilities of achieving a CSS problem with various innovative ways. For instance, she presents 6 ways of vertically centering an element. It also explains the process of finding a solution and draws light on the most suitable solution.What really sets this book apart from the other books is the "casual conversational" tone she maintains throughout the book. Not only language, but the content motivates the reader to read more without getting bored.For a book this amazing, which needs to be preserved, I found the paper quality a little substandard. Hopefully, O'Reilly will fix this issue soon :)

The choices they make in the first 24 hours may define them or get them killed.In reading this story, it made me realize that we humans each have strengths and weaknesses that will make or break us. I really enjoyed learning about Vince, his son, and the people in their part of the world. I look forward to reading the next set of stories as they make their way to my eReader.

I bought this book with high hopes after enjoying the previous series by the author, but sadly I'm feeling a little bit let down after finishing the book. There is not anything I can put my finger on but it just didn't enjoy the story, and for some reason I couldn't identity with the characters and for me that is a big part of every book that I read. If I don't find the characters interesting the nine times out of ten I struggle with the book.

Looks like the beginning of a new series. The last one was incredible story about a man and his son in post apocalyptic world. This one has started out with a lot more drama and is more about a town facing horrific events.

I enjoyed reading this story and finding out more about the characters that appeared in the original series. These all end in cliff hangers, but are worth the wait. My only wish would be that the books would be longer.

There are too many inaccuracies in this book to make it worth 5 stars!Blue Heelers are not bouncy little dogs.My husband is 66, he was drafted in 1972. The Vietnam war ended in 1975.It sounds like Vince is a lot younger than that. There's more than just those 2.I felt the writing to be kind of choppy. Just like this review.Won't buy the next one.

My student is home schooled and has not had many of the experiences that they want her to write about. I have adapted some of them to fit what she does know or had her do some research. All in all I think it is helping make it easier for her.

We used this for writing practice for our 2nd grade homeschooler and it doesn't really work for us. She still hates writing and some of the lessons are so weird that we end up skipping them. It encourages creative thinking and the first lesson sets up the rest of the week nicely, but she's never excited to do it and we find ourselves scratching our heads on what some of the lessons instruct you to do. We will be trying Spectrum for 3rd grade.

We have been using this for our daughter (7 yrs old) over the last month making sure she is prepared for 2nd grade. It has helped her tremendously. The exercises are easy yet challenging enough for her to work through. We have seen a great deal of improvement in our daughters writing.

This is a good workbook, but the first week's lesson was very classroom centric, so it was of little use to us as homeschoolers. So, we just skipped the first week and started on week two. No big.

My 7 year old is not a fan of writing in regular, "boring" lessons.... these daily writing activities are quick and fun, she doesn't mind them at all! lol

As a preschool teacher, I bought these for my daughter and I love them. Very educational and still fun to do.

A little further advanced then what my son did in and grade, but at least it kept him challenged thru out the summer too!

Very good practice book for kids to do in summer. I bought writing, reading and math books for my daughter this summer. This writing book is a great exercise and her writing skill improves a lot after practice. Now she is fully prepared for second grade in the fall. Highly recommend.

After reading this book, I went to Charleston for the second time and saw the city in a different light. Back in the day, the city was not quaint or picturesque; it was hell for black people, slave and free. After reading this, I better understand why Mother Emanuel Church was a target of racial hate, and I want to read more about Denmark Vesey. Kudos to David Robertson.

Author takes what little we know about Bessy and lays the unarticulated pieces of a historical puzzle out for us to draw useful inferences about the meaning and utility of Veseys model of resistence.Authors let's his whiteness get in the way at the end when surmising the internal narrative of black contemporary inhabitants of Veseys landscape in charleston. Waxing nostalgic wasn't necessary or intellectually honest, just a good reminder of the need for more eyes on this story.

Got this book for my husband and he has read it twice

Very informative and relevant about Charleston. Denmark Vesey and his army of enslaved and free men of color were involved in the AME Church in Charleston where a bible study group were murdered recently by a racist white man. This gives an intense look at the history of slavery and racism in the USA.

Fabulous read, every parent should have their child read this book and every parent should read this book. It gives you a smile of Hope and Redemption that not everyone was passive. Even if they didn't make it. Hallelujah for those who tried God bless.

This was a very interesting history of a man and event I had never heard of before. I now wonder why. The author does an excellent job of moving the thinking about the event to modern times.

A lot of history is stored in this book, anyone who thought slaves were content and happy with their condition because they were housed and fed by others should read the book. How could human beings treat another human so savagely because of their skin color, then use the Bible for justification should read Vesey.

About the Author

Philip Briggs has been exploring the highways, byways and backwaters of Africa since 1986, when he spent several months backpacking on a shoestring from Nairobi to Cape Town, and first visited Tanzania, bussing from Nairobi to Dar es Salaam then catching the Tazara Railway to Zambia. He has returned to Tanzania numerous times, among other things to research and author the first Bradt Guide to Tanzania in 1992-93, as well as all seven subsequent editions. Tanzania aside, he has visited more than two dozen African countries in total and written about most of them for specialist travel and wildlife magazines, including BBC Wildlife, Travel Africa and Wanderlust. He still spends at least four months on the road every year, usually accompanied by his wife, the travel photographer Ariadne Van Zandbergen, and spends his rest of the time battering away at a keyboard in the sleepy South African coastal village of Wilderness.Chris McIntyre went to Africa in 1987 after reading Physics at Queen's College, Oxford. He taught with VSO in Zimbabwe for almost three years and travelled extensively, before writing his first guidebook in 1990.
