About the Author

Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 BC), Roman orator and statesman, was born at Arpinum of a wealthy local family. He was taken to Rome for his education with the idea of a public career and by the year 70 he had established himself as the leading barrister in Rome. In the meantime his political career was well under way and he was elected praetor for the year 66. One of the most permanent features of his political life was his attachment to Pompeii. As a politician, his greatest failing was his consistent refusal to compromise; as a statesman his ideals were more honorable and unselfish than those of his contemporaries. Cicero was the greatest of the roman orators, posessing a wide range of technique and an excpetional command of the Latin tongue. He followed the common practice of publishing his speeches, but he also produced a large number of works on the theory and practice of rhetoric, on religion, and on moral and political philosophy. He played a leading part in the development of the Latin hexameter. Perhaps the most interesting of all his works is the collection fo 900 remarkably informative letters, published posthumously. These not only contain a first-hand account of social and political life in the upper classes at Rome, but also reflect the changing personal feelings of an emotional and sensitive man.

Cicero's writings are mesmorizing ...cannot put the book down. IMO they are a treatise if his legal skills, his writing skills, his philosophical thoughts, his view of history of his day, his view of war and business and economics.

If you're going to read the works of arguably THE greatest orator ever, I would highly recommend sticking to either Penguin or Loeb.

In its last days, the Roman Republic was a wild and wooly place. Popular thugs like Lucius Sergius Catilina (Catiline) and Publius Clodius Pulcher saw in the shifting vacuums of power an opportunity to flout the law and win power and riches at the expense of their fellow countrymen. Standing squarely in their path was a Roman Senator, Marcus Tullius Cicero, who knew how to win men's minds with his powerful speeches and who had a fanatical dedication to maintaining the rule of law in the face of anarchy.The art that Cicero practiced is not held in great repute today: We tend to distrust a man who can marshal cogent arguments and dazzling rhetoric in support of a cause. Consider, however, how remarkable it is that so many of Cicero's orations, letters, and other writings have survived today. Not only were his speeches eagerly read by his contemporaries, but early Christian monks saw in the great orator a basically moral, even if Pagan, writer whose work was worth saving in the scriptorium.Among his own speeches, Cicero most highly rated his four blistering attacks on Catilina. My own personal favorite is "In Defence of Titus Annius Milo." In it, the wily orator shows he had a strong streak of Johnny Cochrane. The Tribune Publius Clodius Pulcher had been one of Cicero's most determined enemies and at one time had him banished for his advocacy of executing the leaders of Catiline's conspiracy. When Clodius is killed attempting to bushwhack a rival, Cicero jumped to defend the accused murderer.In a letter, Cicero had bragged, "Let me tell you that it was I who produced the necessary darkness in the court to prevent your guilt from being visible to everyone." Where Cicero claims that Titus Annius Milo was attended at the time of the ambush with an "unwarlike retinue of maids and pages," he was actually accompanied by a large party of gladiators who were more than able to thwart the attack. While claiming that Milo had never threatened Clodius, Cicero wrote a letter to his lifelong correspondent Atticus stating the opposite, that Milo had openly threatened to kill Clodius.Even when pulling the wool over his listeners' eyes, Cicero's political speeches in this volume provide a fascinating picture of a time and place which would otherwise be largely unknown to us.

Marcus Tullus Cicero, the great Roman orator and statesmen, expressed principles that became the bedrock of liberty. He was adamant that the law is legitimate only when it is consistent with transcendent standards of liberty and justice. He emphatically held the moral obligation of government to protect liberty and private property. Historian Murray Rothbard, heaped praise on Cicero, as "the great transmitter of Stoic ideas from Greece to Rome... Stoic natural law doctrines heavily influenced the Roman jurists of the second and third centuries A.D., and thus helped shape the great structures of Roman law which became pervasive in Western civilization." Cicero rejected political violence as the tool of tyrants and demagogues. He spoke out against political violence, and even sounded mildly like Polybius in decrying Roman imperialism: "It is a hard thing to say but we Romans are loathed abroad because of the damage our generals and officials have done. There is now a shortage of prosperous cities for us to declare war on that we can loot them afterwards... Do you know of any single state that we have subdued that is still rich?" Cicero's renown also emanated from his powerful oratory. He took a sterile Latin language, invigorated it with Hellenic finesse, and made a few neologisms along the way, and made it into a poetic language.Among the pagans, I found Cato the Younger to be a better exemplar, but Cicero is really worth reading about. Cicero turned to a pragmatic realpolitik as he realized his endeared Republic was in shambles culturally, morally and politically. Maybe, it was practical. That's debatable. Maybe, I'm hopelessly idealistic like Cato. I don't know."Long before our time the customs of our ancestors molded admirable men, in turn these men upheld the ways and institutions of their forebears. Our age, however, inherited the Republic as if it were some beautiful painting of bygone ages, its colors already fading through great antiquity; and not only has our time neglected to freshen the colors of the picture, but we have failed to preserve its forms and outlines."--Marcus Tullus Cicero

I had purchased Frank McCourt's book Angela's Ashes and really enjoyed the book. He was such a good writer and lived an interesting and sad life. After reading Angela's Ashes I wanted to read more of his work about his life so I purchased Tis, which is a book about his life. This is another extraordinary book by Frank McCourt. He writes so honestly and his love, sadness and triumph comes through. I recommend Tis and other Frank McCourt books. I've never seen the movie based on his books, and they are very vivid and some times heartbreaking and honest.

An excellent reminder of the hardships encountered by our parents and grandparents who came to America in search of a better life.

After the grueling Angela's Ashes the McCourt (and most imigrant Irish) saga continues. So many of these folks just never found the right warm and fuzzy place to settle into that the movies always told us about did they? Maybe this ought to be required reading for those of us who have forgotten how difficult it was and still is to be an immigrant. I'm grateful that my ancestors were so poor that they quickly moved on towards the midwest to make a life, away from the temptation to hop another ship back to the old country. Unfortunately the lessons of those terribly difficult assimilation years haven't stuck with very many of us so as to imbue us with more compassion for today's newcomers. I'm glad the McCourts stuck it out long enough to provide a good lesson.

I got this CD set to listen to at work. I had already listened to "Angela's Ashes". Now, I am listening to "Teacher Man". Frank McCourt is hands down my favorite writer. He is such an inspiration. He is one person I really would like to have met. If you wanted to just reach back in time, find little Frank and give him a hug during "Angela's Ashes", you might not feel exactly the same about adult Frank. He is no longer directly in the grip of his mother's poverty once in America. His mentality is still in the slums of Limerick, though not because he really wants it to be. It really is just all he knows and what was engrained in him. Throughout this book, you see his charm and intelligence shining through. But, his self doubt seems to always have a hold of him, dragging him back down. His ignorance of so many things most Americans take for granted and his severe humbleness make him endearing all the same. I would recommend "Tis" to anyone. If you had a tough time while growing up, you will be able to relate. I suppose, if you had a perfect childhood, you can get a glimpse of how the rest of us felt. :)

This was such a wonderful honest book. I felt like I was listening to an old man I just met at a coffee shop. He tells you the story of his life in such a wonderful way. I cannot imagine the things that he grew up with. I find his honest revelry regarding his own struggles with alcohol heartbreaking. He did what he knew. He spoke of alcohol being the curse of the Irish, that his father ruined his childhood because of drinking and yet he himself couldn't control it. One thing that stuck out was his struggles with religion. It saddened me when he said that he didnt know how to have a conversation, direct prayer with The Lord. Through his struggle he became something, and I think that's what everyone needs to know!

Poignant, intense, exciting, gut wrenching yet heart warming are the scenes, actions and memories described in this continuation of an indepth look at the the trials, tribulations and successes of Frank Mc Court and his family. As you read it, you "are there" in New York, in Ireland, -at Mam's almost reunion with Frank's father, - in the army with Frank in Europe, - in church, - in the boarding house which provided meager temporary shelter, - in the countless dull mind-numbing jobs he had before becoming a teacher, - in the classroom trying to inspire lethargic students. With wit, and a lot of mischievious charm, author Mc Court escorts us through his romantic liasons, marriage and birth of his daughter, - his brothers arrival and existence in New York,- his own "coming of age in America" as he matures, - and the death of his beloved mother, Angela, (Mam).'Tis a grand saga. 'Tis a grand book. -- 'Tis. Now let's see the movie. John Wayne, Barry Fitzgerald, Victor Mc Glagen (The Quiet Man") would have been ideal, but they are gone. That leaves Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting) or Robin Williams ( Dead Poets Society). How about it Mr Mc Court.? Write the screenplay for the movie based on your memoir triology, or at least give us another outstanding book!!!

I really enjoyed "Angela's Ashes," and like this book even more. You basically could combine the two into one big book, as one is just a continuation of the other. Both are written in McCourt's unique style and both are a pleasure to read. Much happens to Frankie McCourt once he gets to the U.S. and the life he leads here keep you both interested and wondering just how he would be able to turn his fortunes for the better.This, as was "Angela's Ashes," is a very honest book. In no way does McCourt attempt to cover up his flaws or missteps. In no way does he try to paint himself a hero. You get the real deal here, and many times I found myself closely relating to what he was thinking at any given moment.I highly recommend this book.

This is a funny, but somber, well written account of an Irish immigrant (the author) and his family "troubles". He also wrote "Angela's Ashes" and has won many awards. It is a window into a certain time in the history of immigrants from one country and the changes and obstacles they faced, and the country they left behind but stayed in torch with.

Oh yes, this is just what the doctor ordered. Aside from the sports section there is a tremendous amount of information in there and I have purchase this book and given it away as gifts to younger black children. We have done so much more in life than play sports and music.

Every person of color in this nation should own a copy of this under represented info laden work of non fiction. Heck, there arer more historical facts not being told to the world about the African American people.

This book has really enlighten my view on slavery and Americas participation in this atrocity. I feel as if every home in America needs to have this book as well as the Encyclopedia of african-american heritage. If more of the world or America would actually read these books they would know more about this great country that we live in and how African Americans played such a principal role in shaping America to be what it is today.

Read one person as food is being prepared and talk about it at the table during dinner. Love this book great facts and hidden inspiration.

My nephew is a book worm, academic type kid. I got this for him for his 14th birthday. He really like it. I knew this because after all the presents and the cake and ice cream, we found him reading it during his party. The information about each African American was presented in one short but very detailed paragraph. I think it was designed to get your attention and keep it, but not too long on one subject. I am glad I ordered it early so I could read it. Well worth it if your teen likes non-fiction or even in your own library.

Lengthy but very informative and pretty easy to navigate. My teen nephews love it.

Generally, I love the five year calendar. It helps tremendously with scheduling vacations--kids on school year, husband bids vacation in July for following Oct-Sep and work schedule every four months. We need a calendar that goes beyond the current calendar year. I love it for all those reasons. However, no holidays, not even the major ones--Thanksgiving, Christmas, Memorial Day, Labor Day. No daylight savings time (change clock) reminders. Anyone can print a blank calendar--I really expected holidays and was disappointed on that front. However, I looked them up and wrote them in because managing household plans when work and school operate on different calendars, long range is the way to go.

doesn't have all the extra pages for each day that take up room in the calendar that I never use. one month is spread over 2 pages. I do wish it had the holidays, but I can live without. The cover seems strong enough, but time will tell with that. Right off the bat, I'm quite happy with my new work calendar!

Page is extremely thin.

not really knowing what i was getting when ordering i'm pleasantly surprised. it is like a coloring book like another review said. it is a paper back book like those big coloring books, and jumbo word search books. it has enough room for writing memos and reminders or keeping track of important dates and goings ons. i don't know how long the cover will hold out but it seems like what ive been looking for, for the next few years at work.

Just wished it had the holidays in it.

I like to keep a paper calendar at my desk for quick and easy reference. This one is just the right size for that. Each day offers a 2" space to mark any important appts. I may have on a given day. As others have stated, holidays aren't noted on this calendar, but for me, that is not necessary. I would agree with other reviewers that the paper is a bit thin, but it's really not excessively so and my ink pen doesn't show through on the opposite side of the page. The price of this 5 year calendar is no more than what you would typically pay for a one year calendar so it's a great deal.

I ordered this planner for myself. I have to keep three people's appointments plus house plans, etc., and I can't stand having notes all over the place. This way, it's easier to keep everything in one place and make sure I don't double book appointments like I've done in the past. I've started using it already for 2019 and so far seems to be doing what I want it to do. I can also take it with me when we go out and make sure that there no overlapping appointments. Working great for me. Thanks!

Got my my son for Christmas who wants to know all there is to know about tornados. Well this book covers it. Great info and a great buy.

For older kids, the Anatomy of a Tornado will help kids understand more about weather and tornados.In addition to this book being filled with amazing photographs and great facts and information, this book has some fabulous ideas. There are a few diy's and things kids can create of feel at home. I love this idea because it makes learning about tornadoes more realistic and even hands on.A very informative and educational book.
