After some extensive home renovations most of our foundation plantings were destroyed. We knew we wanted some larger evergreens to start but we also wanted the beds filled with colorful perennials. Not really sure where to start, we picked up a copy of Lee Miller's Landscape Design Combinations. Everything we needed to know we found in this book. It became an invaluable tool as we worked through our project. Living in the country we have issues with the deer dining on our plantings but there is a section of the book dedicated to just that. We also love having large planters on our decks and patios and there is a whole section devoted to creating just the perfect combinations for all the different areas of our yard. If you want beautiful gardens and need some help getting started or just want to create some great combinations I would highly recommend this new book. It will not disappoint. Bravo Lee Miller!

I look a lot of gardening books- mostly for the pictures and usually way more involved than I can create myself. This particular book however, has real ideas, plans and directions that I can actually accomplish! The photographs are beautiful and the plants clearly labeled. The subject matter includes garden areas of all sizes, for all seasons, with a bonus of container plantings to add patio interest. And if you happen to live on Long Island (or similar Northeast location) you know you will find the plants in your local nursery and that they will thrive in your garden. A winner!

I believe this is one of the most comprehensive, educational, and versatile books I have ever read or seen on landscape design. As a landscaper/gardener of 20 years, I can honestly say there are few blogs, books and websites that get my attention and makes me want revisit their site over and over or actually purchase a book in search of something original and new. Lee Miller gives a fresh take on her use of plant combinations that can only be acquired through years of study and practice. She has successfully combined some of the most stunning foliage and color combinations I have ever seen in all my years of doing landscaping. Most books that deal with landscaping/gardening only seem to show you how to combine perennials that take the same lighting conditions (sun or shade) with different bloom times and then touch on shrubs and trees as individual topics. What I have found with Lee Millers books is that she shows you how to accomplish a harmonious planting scheme by combining trees, shrubs, and perennials all while focusing on texture, color, blooms, shape (weeping, upright, etc...), plant size, lighting conditions, and hardiness. On top of all of that, she presents this complex thought process in an easy to read book in a concise teaching. Thanks Lee for all of the mental focus you put into this book and your first book......I have them both. You are a true artist and teacher!

This book will serve as a good source book for homeowners in the North-east who rather do their own landscape design. While it is too much to expect that a particular design or plant combination out of a book will work without some tweak when applying to specific location, what this books helps you with is giving you some overview of the design principles as well as examples of design combinations that you can start with, including selecting plants for 4 season interest. Besides, the plants listed in the book are what is commonly available in the area and suitable for north-eastern landscapes. I find that this book is especially useful for novice garden designers who enjoys the adventure of putting together their own design. In addition, I would like to mention that Lee, the author, was very helpful answering my questions when I emailed her directly.

For those of us who like to garden but don't know where to start, this book provides clear, concise and in-depth direction.Beautiful photos are provided along with the instruction for you to see what your dream garden can look like. The author is knowledgeable and although she uses technical terms, she writes so the average person can understand. This book will surely get you motivated to start planning for this coming season. This is the perfect complement to her first book. Thank you Lee.

I usually do not write reviews but had to make an exception because I love this author’s books. This book contained wonderful ideas for landscape design that is simple enough for the average gardener. The book has plenty of pictures that show what plants work in harmony with other plants and all the plants are indigenous to this area and easily found at local nurseries.

I am now inspired to renovate my back yard and look forward to creating a beautiful space for all seasons. This book was easy to follow and a quick read. A great reference !

Very basic though accessible information using very basic plant selections throughout the book. Not much variety or imagination but a good primer for a complete novice.

Review

"Using very simple language and only a few sentences per page, these titles introduce common tools. Each book shows the parts of the subject (which are easy to identify in close-up photos) and explains how the item is used and by whom. All the volumes include a list of safety tips at the end. Color photos show a multicultural cast of boys, girls, and adults using wrenches, hammers, etc., most wearing the necessary safety equipment. A page at the back of each title explains how the tools are simple machines or why they are important. Unfortunately, though this section is written in simple language and would likely be relevant to school curriculum, the sheer amount of text might deter early readers. These books have more information than Anne Rockwell's The Toolbox (Walker, 2004), but will appeal to a slightly younger audience than the 'Tools of the Trade' series (ABDO, 2009)." --School Library Journal, Series Made Simple--Journal

Amazon.com Review

A Severe Mercy, by Sheldon Vanauken, is a heart-rending love story described by its author as "the spiritual autobiography of a love rather than of the lovers." Vanauken chronicles the birth of a powerful pagan love borne out of the relationship he shares with his wife, Davy, and describes the growth of their relationship and the dreams that they share. As a symbol of their love, they name their dream schooner the Grey Goose, "for the grey goose, if its mate is killed flies on alone and never takes another." While studying at Oxford, Sheldon and Davy develop a friendship with C.S. Lewis, under whose influence and with much intellectual scrutiny they accept the Christian doctrine. As their devotion to God intensifies, Sheldon realizes that he is no longer Davy's primary love--God is. Within this discovery begins a brewing jealousy. Shortly after, Davy acquires a fatal illness. After her death Sheldon embarks on an intense experience of grief, "to find the meaning of it, taste the whole of it ... to learn from sorrow whatever it had to teach." Through painstaking reveries, he comes to discover the meaning of "a mercy as severe as death, a severity as merciful as love." He learns that her death "had these results: It brought me as nothing else could do to know and end my jealously of God. It saved her faith from assault. ...And it saved our love from perishing." Replete with 18 letters from C.S. Lewis, A Severe Mercy addresses some of the universal questions that surround faith--the existence of God and the reasons behind tragedy. --Jacque Holthusen

I read A Severe Mercy when it first came out in 1977, and it impacted me deeply. I loved everything about it, his skill as an author and poet, his love for Davy and their growth together, his friendship with CS Lewis, and the profound way he shared his faith story. I wrote Sheldon a letter when I first read the book, and received a wonderful letter back, and it remains something I cherish. In the mid 1990's my wife and I went to Oxford, enjoyed evensong, and ate and had a couple of beers at The Eastgate, where Vanauken and Lewis had often met. Though I'm sure it's changed by now, at that time the decor was pleasingly dated. I've shared this book with many people over the years and haven't ever talked to anyone who didn't love it. Some years later Vanauken wrote that every book is at it's core a letter to friends, and his book more than most. It's nice to read it in that spirit, as he found joy in sharing his personal story with you, his friend.

Absolutely phenomenal book. Aside from being beautifully written and a great story, the book gives some great insight into the difficulties that accompany not only the loss of a spouse/loved one, but also the accompanying struggles with faith. Important for pretty much anybody living in our time. Highly recommend it.

I read this at the suggestion of a friend who knows me as an insatiable devotee of C.S. Lewis. Mr. Lewis is a great and interesting writer, but the various editions of this book with jackets screaming "18 LETTERS BY CS LEWIS (oh, and some book by a guy named Vanauken)" do it a terrible disservice. Vanauken's love story with his wife is profoundly interesting, their acquaintances in America and England fascinating on their own merits, and Vanauken's elegy to his wife is a heartbreaking masterpiece of catharsis. By most critical accounts, he was never again as great a writer as he is here, but A Severe Mercy stands firmly on its own as both great autobiography and spiritual memoir.

Title: A Severe MercyAuthor: Sheldon VanaukenPublished: 1977Year I read it: 2012One sentence summary: Vanauken's autobiographical narrative of the deep love he and his wife developed; their adventures all around the world, leading them to Oxford; their journey into faith, with the help of Oxfordian friend, "Jack" Lewis; and of their loss, the severe mercy.Interesting fact: It contains 18 of Vanauken's letters from C. S. Lewis.Three reasons to read it:- This is honest-to-goodness one of the best love stories I've ever read! The depth, the romance produced from self-sacrifice (and common love for literature), is just astounding. And it's so refreshing to hear a romance from the man's perspective! Loved that beginning.- Oxford! This book captures Oxford of the '50's - which really hasn't changed much. See below for some of the best explanations of life in that University town.- The pain Vanauken goes through - and the faith with which he faces tragedy - are far more than "tear-jerking" or "heart-breaking." None of those cliche's will do. This book touches something far deeper. One reason you maybe shouldn't:It has very, very sad parts.Great quotes:Love is the final reality; and anyone who does not understand this, be he writer or sage, is a man flawed of wisdom. We saw self as the ultimate danger to love, which it is.Coming to England was like coming home, coming to a home half-remembered - but home."That's what Oxford is, a place to talk about everything...""This, you know, is a time of taking in--taking in friendship, conversation, gaiety, wisdom, knowledge, beauty, holiness--and later, well, there'll be a time of giving out... Now we must store up the strength, the riches all that Oxford had given us, to sustain us after. She stood there, Oxford, like a mother to us all with her hands heaped with riches."I tended, indeed, to feel that God Himself dwelt in Oxford, His holy city, where He could hear the bells. He had been wont to despise emotions: girls were weak, emotions–tears– were weakness. But this morning he was thinking that being a great brain in a tower, nothing but brain, wouldn’t be much fun. No excitement, no dog to love, no joy in the blue sky– no feelings at all. But feelings– feelings are emotions! He was suddenly overwhelmed by the revelation that what makes life worth living is, precisely, the emotions. But then– this was awful!– maybe girls with their tears and laughter were getting more out of life. Shattering! He checked himself, showing one’s emotions was not the thing: having them was. Still, he was dizzy with the revelation. What is beauty but something is responded to with emotion? Courage, at least, is partly emotional. All the splendour of life. But if the best of life is, in fact, emotional, then one wanted the highest, the purest emotions: and that meant joy. Joy was the highest. How did one find joy? In books it was found in love– a great love… So if he wanted the heights of joy, he must have it, if he could find it, in great love. But in the books again, great joy through love always seemed go hand in hand with frightful pain. Still, he thought, looking out across the meadow, still, the joy would be worth the pain– if indeed, they went together. If there were a choice– and he suspected there was– a choice between, on the one hand, the heights and the depths and, on the other hand, some sort of safe, cautious middle way, he, for one, here and now chose the heights and the depths.

While first reading this book I thought it was a story of two young selfish people. But that is what most of us are when we begin life independently of parental figures. Then it began to unfold to a sweet love story. Comfortable and truthful (they thought) with one another. Then they "discovered" God. Truly a wonderful book. I am glad that Sheldon decided to put their story to paper. So many hours spent thinking about "things". I will cherish this book and perhaps reread.

I heard about this book on Easter Sunday 2010. My Pastor was preaching and used is as an illustration. I listened to him and wondered what kind of strength would be required for someone to lose his/ her spouse. Little did I know that that morning I had become a widow myself... my husband of 4 yrs had committed suicide. This book made me reevaluate my attitude toward priorities and the place of God in my life. It got me through the most difficult time of my life. The author pours out his heart to us, it is as if you are there, with him and Jean, basking in the love they feel for each other. The events after they met Lewis are vividly described and give the reader a feel of that athmospere from times past. The book was written in times where the publishers were very selective of what would be published, the editing is superb. I recommend it to anyone, it is a book about love, life and the place of God in both.

What a thought provoking memoir.I became a Christian after many years of skepticism and doubt that this religion had anything to offer me.However, I was to discover a God more than capable of handling my questions. And this is what this book demonstrates through a beautiful story of love put to the ultimate test.Believers and skeptics alike, read this book if you are wrestling with the big issues of life - our marvellous Creator offers you the same patient consideration he has offered to countless thousands before.

I've been looking for a book about dragons. Not dragon riders, dragon slayers, or a girl who get's sent to a dragon's lair by her Aunt. I wanted a book about dragons. However, when I found this series, I didn't expect it to be any good. I was proved wrong. This book is in the point of view of Starflight the NightWing. In a world where the dragon tribes are at war, a prophecy has been delivered. Five dragonets will come and stop the war. A SeaWing, a SandWing, a MudWing, a NightWing, and a SkyWing. They were to hatch on the brightest night, and, in their eighth year, stop the war.Starflight has been taken by the NightWings. Again. And Morrowseer is not happy with him. At all. It doesn't help that his friends don't know he was taken, and think that he left on his own. Also, Starflight is not the fighter of the bunch. He's the bookworm. The nervous one, the one who has a huge crush on Sunny and has no idea how to tell her. He is also now my favorite of the group. This book is the best one in the series so far. It's full of twists and turns, including an alternet group of prophecy dragonets (who were not hatched on the brightest night), a young NightWing, Fatespeaker, who has a huge crush on him (That Starflight doesn't notice), a father, Mastermind, who happens to be the one leading the 'research' on the RainWings, which involve handcuffing them to walls and binding their mouths shut so that they can't spit their poison, and a queen that no one ever sees. Starflight also finds a dreamvistor, which is an animus-touched object that allows a dragon to enter another dragon's dream. (Turns out, Clay does dream about food. Like, lots and lots of food)Again, like the last one, I have no problems with this books. Starflight is a cute and nervous narrator, and it's interesting knowing his thoughts. It was also left on a bit of a cliffhanger, so it leaves you eagerly waiting for the next one.

This is a good book, I read it fairly quickly, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Wings of Fire series. Honestly, though, this is not my favorite of Sutherland's works. I found it a bit....not boring, but not exactly my favorite book. It DOES clear up a lot stuff, and I REALLY love the 'poetic justice', as Sutherland puts it, of (SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT) the "all powerful" NightWings bowing to the "useless" RainWings. That just goes to show that just cause you're a bit lazy and un-involved in certain things does not mean that you are weak. My favorite part is probably when the RainWings invade. Like, DUDE, that was awesome. I really admire Tui T. Sutherland for creating such an amazing series. It is well written, fun to read, and overall just awesome. This isn't my favorite of the series, yeah, but I still highly recommend it, especially if you want to continue the Wings of Fire series. Believe me, it only gets better from here! By B.K.

Wings of Fire is one of my favorite series. Starflight is just so funny, all worried and cautious and hopelessly in love with Sunny. Fatespeaker is a great new character, and I love her. She has so much faith in her visions, it's sort of weird. I am so glad that Morrowseer died in the end, because when there is multiple characters to hate, at least two of them have to die, even if it is over the span of multiple books. I couldn't help feeling like Fatespeaker, all sad when Squid got banished and when Viper died. I did NOT feel sorry for Morrowseer, however! He had it coming! Tui Sutherland is a great author, because she makes you laugh and cry and read her books over and over and over.

Our daughters love these books, including this one. They say the writing flows very well, easy to read, great adventures and they breezed right through the series. They can't put these books down! Highly recommended. (Our daughters started reading these when they were eight; one is now nine and the other ten. They have read all of the series including the Warriors series, Wings of Fire series, Seekers series, and Survivors series). They did not like the Survivors series at all. Our daughters did not like the Survivors series because they felt that all the characters were too similar to each-other and the plot appeared to be unorganized and missed it's meaning completely, (vague, confusing plot). In addition, my daughters state that the characters in Survivors appeared to be whinny and undesirable (difficult to connect with).

My 6 year old Granddaughter loves dragons. She picked The Wings of Fire because of the covers. I have been reading this series to both of my Grandchildren (11yrs and 6 yrs) and are enjoying the adventure. I really like the development of each dragon's personality, back story and the way they have become a "Family". Looking forward to Book Five.

This is an intriguing series for young readers. It's creative, cohesive and very unique. I bought this set of books as a gift (I found the price was better buying each individually rather than as a set). The reader was so delighted that I even pre-ordered the newest book. Please click "helpful" if you liked this review. :)

There's a cliffhanger here...can Sunny, the smallest, defenceless dragonet have hope for a rescue? Can the two tribes get along together so they may both flourish? And what about Starflight? He is so injured! Could the Prophesy be fake, like Morrowseer says? I am so excited to find the answers, I'm onto the next book in the series!!

I have no idea what these books are about and am completely lost in dragons with weird names that seem to act like teenagers when my daughter tells me about them but she’s really enjoying it!! So we bought the first next six to go with the first she got awhile ago.

For the past few years, I have been pining for a series that would come close to captivating me as much as my favorite series of all had previously done... Harry Potter. No, I would never compare between the two, I simply correlate the depth to which both series had such a dramatic effect on me and the extent to which I fully dove into each book.People... I'm a mom, I have a life, and NO time to read. I read this series in under 5 days.I honestly thought, just from reading reviews and plot lines that this was just another supernatural series, destined to not live up to it's great predecessors of supernatural series greatness. I even waited to read this after I bought it. I was SO wrong with my initial thinking.I fell into this series.. into the words. The characters. The plot. Everything about this book had me so enveloped into the story and world. I just completed the third book, and I am re-reading this first one again because I do not want to escape the magic of the world Sarah J. Maas has thrown me head-first into. I could not stop reading until I finished the last book and I still beg for more, as any good series would leave you wanting.Read this book if you... Want to find yourself 6 hours later, finished with a book and buying the second one immediately following finishing the first; need a good romance novel; want to lose yourself in an amazing series; love books that leave you weak in the knees, crying uncontrollably, breathless, or so excited you're hurling your fist in the air without realizing (yes, my husband was REALLY confused)..; enjoyed Harry Potter, or Twilight, or Pride and Prejudice, Romeo and Juliet, Hunger Games, The Alchemist, The Magicians, The Goldfinch... or etc.etc.etc... ; want to read something that you will remember forever.... THIS is the book, and series, you should read.

So here I sit, having gone through the OMG ACOTAR SERIES IS AMAZING phase, and out the other end, I can sit back and think "What the actual hell?"I'm a HUGE Maas fan, so when I found out she was writing another series, I had to have it. For the first time in a long time, my library actually got the book within a month of its release, so I checked out ACOTAR and read it in a single day. I loved it.Books two came out, and while I was super disappointed in the pointless sex thrown in every so often and whole chapters dedicated to this nonsense, I continued reading because the story was compelling enough. And then ACOWAR emerged, and everything changed. This was a series I read numerous times before ACOWAR came out, and I saw things that genuinely bothered me, but I ignored them (I don't even know why) until I just couldn't stand it anymore.ACOTAR is nothing more than erotica. I feel like the series as a whole started out with plans of being some sort of "story" porn that has a kick-ass plot with "hot" scenes thrown in for whatever reason, and then it got to ACOWAR and decided it wanted to be The Bachelor or a soap opera instead. The relationship between Tamlin and Feyre GREATLY disturbs me. She's taking care of her family and he swoops in after she accidentally kills a fae (who was disguised as a wolf int he woods where hunters hunt...) and takes her away, claiming she's going to be in trouble and damned and blah blah. No, she's pampered and given servants and pretty clothes and good food. Tamlin dresses her up like a doll and makes snide remarks when she falls short of his goals (fae goals, mind you).Feyre is a HUMAN. Tamlin is fae. He acts like her humanity is a curse or something to hold against her, and he constantly makes remarks about how she's too fragile, too uneducated, too plain, etc. Instead of "fixing" these issues, Tamlin does nothing other than tell her what to do and not do.He sexually assaults her after Calanmai, and in the book Feyre shows how much she does not want his advances, and he shoves her against the wall and BITES her, then tells her not to ever go against him again. How is this OK? If my husband ever did this to me, I'd kick him in the crotch and leave. This is not OK. This is not a relationship. This is abuse, which is why it disgusts me that people go on and on about Tamlin. The fact that Feyre and Tamlin have sex at a later time after he did this makes it worse. why, Feyre, are you going to throw yourself at a man who A) Doesn't care about you based off his degrading comments and B) threatens you. Not only that, he basically blames her for a near-rape experience when he literally did nothing to look out for her and/or stop the guys who were going to attack her? That being said, I have a lot of issues with Feyre. She gets off too easy on everything, and it's like her brain is only wired to care if the dude is hot. You take care of your family, but then you walk into Tamlin's embrace after the things he has said and done. I understand she has been abused by this, but at the same time, she could have said no. Death is a lot better than basically being a sex slave or punching bag to an immortal person determined to imprison you until you die. She's never punished for killing a fae. Lucien and Tamlin tell her about magical creatures that could give her what she wants, and the next day she walks out and finds them...the elusive creatures...that are hard for fae to find?Lucien is about the only well developed character, and he's too sexualized sometimes for me to take me seriously. If you keep pointing out the abs, tanned skin, or whatever on the dude, you're turning them into a slab of meat. All of the males, and truthfully the females as well, in ACOTAR are "perfect" in the idea of what today's society thinks is beauty, sexy, and amazing at everything. This is sexist on every account. Your characters become nothing more than fantasies--which is why I say this is nothing more than porn/erotica.Sure, you can get some great messages out of this series, but is it worth all of the dung in the way? Specifically with the later books, there's too much sex at some points for it to even be OK. Please, go try to have sex that many times or for days on end and tell me how that is. if you can do that, I'm sorry, but you're either a whore or you're just kinda crazy, because that's too much. Why I ever read this book and like it, I truthfully don't know, but I'm done with this series. I'm done with this fandom, and I'm fed up with seeing people "swoon" or make comments or even draw/like at that nude art about LITERARY CHARACTERS. Guys, seriously? This is not a book for young girls, but when I went to the first (and last) Maas event, most of the audience there were between the ages of 14-20 (predominately 15-17 years of age) and SCREAMED when Maas was mentioning SEX SCENES. I'm not going to continue to support a series that is encouraging young teens and young women to have unrealistic ideas of men as well as sexual fantasies, especially the married women who I've seen act this same way. if I were your husband, I wouldn't be able to deal with that. I wouldn't want those books in my house.About the only good thing I have to say for ACOTAR was that there actually was a plot in this book, and it was good, if insanely slow to get rolling, and the amount of sex was fairly minimal.

I hate rating books this poorly, seeing how difficult it is to write one at all (let alone a good one). But that said, I have to. I didn’t care at all for the main character, Feyre. She wasn’t just clueless, she was downright unintelligent. She knows nothing about faeries or their powers at all, and yet consistently ignores everything everyone tries to tell her about them. The only way she got through the book and made it to the end is because she was constantly being rescued. Otherwise she would’ve died as soon as the first little mishap on Tamlin’s lands took place. But seeing as how she’s constantly rewarded for her follies, she just keeps doing the same thing again and again. This part actually made me laugh - when she makes it to the court Under the Mountain (in spite of everything and everyone) and is standing in front of Amarantha, after being warned ferociously about her again and again:“And as I stared into her black eyes, I realized I was going to die.” Wow, really? She literally just figured that out? I highlighted that place in the book and am just amazed by it.Another example of her unintelligence is when Amarantha tells her the riddle. Coming in to this book fresh, with no prior knowledge about the plot at all, I guessed the answer to the riddle when I first read it. But Feyre, claiming to love Tamlin oh so deeply (which by the way she discards him in the second book, I see), does not guess it until conveniently at the very end for some reason, after she’s gone through all the trials. Also I really fail to see why Amarantha decides to hinge everything on whether or not Feyre could figure out a riddle. Anyone with a shred more intelligence than Feyre would’ve guessed it instantly and Amarantha would have been defeated. The only reason I finished the book is because I like to finish what I start and it was a mildly interesting plot aside from the main character. I cannot recommend this book at all personally. But I know there are lots of other people who like it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

This is a Fantasy Romance novel, not Romance first, but it's intended for the young female reader who wants some real excitement in her story. Probably many teenage boys will love it too, from the number of positive reviews a lot of others did, but if you are a mature reader, especially if you've read a lot of fantasy, I'd say 2 dollars is 2 much.I'm a voracious reader, I'll read almost anything and, I thought, a best seller for two dollars? Sure, and then when I got to the end it was so exciting that I decided that three more books for six dollars was worth it too. I wish I hadn't.This series uses every standard trick, and the worst bit is that it's times two--a hero and a heroine--each of which is a very simple character with standard (and different) super powers. She is the ultimate magic user he ths super warrior. Then there are the standard plot twists, which I won't go into detail about because I don't want to spoil it for you. But I will say that in the second book he uses the same objectionable plot twist THREE times! I prefer it when that trick is never used, the second use and I'm screaming, the third and... well. And critical actions by the people in the stories are just stupid. I mean really stupid. But that's not the worst bit. In this series using a bow and arrow as a military weapon is a big innovation! There's an entire culture that rides horses into battle and no one else uses horses! It's just sad. Yea, you say, so why did you buy the entire series? Because on the bright side it is fairly well written, good pacing, and the exciting highs are really high. I more or less said "hang the realism, this is good stuff." But then, well, that was the first in the series. Book two is quite a bit worse. So why do I say the author is shooting for the young female audience? Well (though maybe I shouldn't admit it) I have read some of the modern romance fantasies, even finished a few, and basically this has all the hallmarks. Everyone, and I mean everyone, who is a main character is drop dead gorgeous. If you want to know how important someone is just check out how gorgeous they are. There are long chapters spent on loosing virginity, it is frankly lightly pornographic. So, if that's what you want, well there are better books out there.Oh, and finally, this is not a four book series. It's really, from what I can tell, two two book series. Which is not necessarily worse, but you don't need to read books three and four to get a grand completion. Book three really drops into soap opera stuff. So, in the end, if you want to read the first book go ahead. It is only two dollars. But don't say I didn't warn you. (And don't buy the second.)

This is a painful read. I made it to the halfway point hoping it would get better but it was too horrible to waste anymore time on. The writer was all over the place and the characters lacked any depth. The dialogue and situations are completely unrealistic and random. For example, the male lead had no interest in a secondary female character, but in the next chapter he is in love with her. Then he's sleeping with a random woman and the writer implies a deep connection between them when, according to the timeline, they could have only been together for a few days or a couple weeks. The story would also jump years, months, hours...you never knew what the hell was going on. Whole periods of the characters' lives, that were important to their development, were just passed over. I could go on and on. Just do yourself a favor and don't waste your money or time.

Wow. For the first book in a series, there's a LOT going on here.We have multiple characters, in multiple locations… but unlike G Martin, you can actually keep the storylines coherent in your mind.I will say that there is a stunning amount of violence, depicted just enough to get your mind to fill in the gaps. Those gaps were traumatising. There is so much death in this book.I'm the emotionally over-invested type, the kind who feels every blow & its consequences. If you have any sort of penchant for emotional involvement, be prepared to have your heart beaten black & blue, stabbed a few times, & dissected as you watch. It's rough going. The underlying heroes journeys, the character development, the world building & the pace are all excellent, which is why, despite my poor heart's traumas, this book gets five stars.Let's be real. This is me.That fifth star is for amazing editing, superlative grammatical structuring, & crafting something that is a pleasure to read, regardless of the content.I'm definitely seeing this series through to the end.

I have never left a review ... But read ... A ... Lot... I always tell my kids to just read the first few pages or the first chapter. If its no good, you don't have to read it. There are too many books in this world to give time to the boring ones... Unless of course its required reading. But sometimes a book needs a little time before it becomes good. I know of some popular books like that...(maybe you do too...I'm not going to name them) So, I start off by reading them out loud to get it started. Well.... This is the first book I listened to on Audible. It was a free trial. I had a VERY hard time getting into it. Basically thought it was a waist and wanted to end it. However, when I was on ling drives I would listen a bit. After about a month of listening here and there... I kinda wanted to know what would happen next. Lol. By half way through I gave up food and sleep to finish it... and o have to say this is now one of my all time favorite books! I cannot remember the last time I felt this way tward a book !!!! BEST BOOK EVER. Can not wait to read the next one. Better get the chores done first, b/c I know I'll be worthlessly lost in the next one. My advice is....just read the first few chapters...if you don't like it, don't finish it. (But you will) :-)

There are few books that Chai fully immerse me in the storyAmber Chronicles: ZelaznyWorld of Tiers: FarmerThis volume is another.Micro and Ella are siblings with a mysterious past.Ella saves up to learn to be an enchantress, and Miro attends the pens where Blade Master Brogan teaches boys to use swords in preparation to be blade singers.I got this book free through Prime Reading program but accidentally returned it before I finished. The story was so good I had to buy it. Once I was 50-55% through the story hit another octave and I simply couldn't put it down.I LOVED it. If you like Fantasy I think you will too! Highly recommended
