I am *so glad* this book is back in print! It gently introduces the von Trapp family traditions throughout the liturgical year, but told in a beautifully rich, story-like style. The topic could easily become dry, but the tone is such that one can imagine oneself sitting with Maria von Trapp over tea, learning how to live the liturgical year in a large family.Physically, the book is sturdy, with glossy pages in color. A very high-quality product that I can absolutely see myself gifting to my children as they grow up and start their families.Two things I wish were slightly different:1. Some hymns spill over onto a second page, requiring a page turn, when minor edits would have made it possible to slightly change the order of hymns to keep them easier to sing together as a family (or! Make small hymn booklets available for purchase/download)2. Quite a few of the hymns/antiphons have a Latin text that I wish were also included, both for reference and for actual use. I doubt many who are singing the "Alma Redemptoris Mater" are using the English words provided, "Blessed Mother of the Savior."
This book- I've been waiting to find a copy for years! The original has been out of print and used copies are quite pricey, so I am so glad that this new edition is available. I grew up loving The Sound of Music and there are lots of family jokes about wanting to be Maria von Trapp, so reading the real Maria's warm "voice" carry through in this text as she describes and shares her family culture is such a delight to read.This printing is a lovely hardback book with glossy pages and little original illustrations. Maria narrates how her family lived out the liturgical year, keeping traditions that reflected their Catholic faith, as well as Austrian customs and family celebrations. She shares ideas for decorating, teaching, and prayer for all the holidays and holy days. Each section also has recipes and music. And my favorite chapter, called "Our Life- A Feast," details how the family celebrated the unique and "ordinary" events of life- birthdays, Sacraments, graduations, etc. It gives a lovely little glimpse into their lives and is inspires me to build and hold traditions and the collective memory of a family.No matter your age or family situation there is something to be learned from and enjoyed in this book. So much of the faith can be woven into our daily life, from the way we decorate to the food we eat, those actions tell the story of what we believe and pass it on to a new generation.
There are lots of liturgical living books and websites out there right now but what makes this one special is that it comes from a place of experience. Maria didn't just research these practices; she grew up with them, lived them, and passed them along. This is what distinguishes this book. She is not fumbling along trying to figure out how they might have celebrated Pentecost or Advent in years gone by, she is actually just relating her experience. I love it for that. It is so different to hear about someone's lived experience of the liturgical life than someone's learned experience of the liturgical life based on research.I think the loveliest part of the book is her descriptions of family life. Family was central to the von Trapp family so you read about the books they read, the games they played, the songs they sang, and the ways they feasted and fasted. We long for the liturgical life because it gives us community, family, and connects us to the wider Church and our faith. Maria gives us the full experience in her book. It is a rich and beautiful book of family and faith well-lived. If you own one liturgical living book, it should be this one.
This book is one of my favorites. It's not only an incredibly useful guide on traditional catholic liturgical living, but it is also an enjoyable read. Maria Von Trapp is such an enjoyable author, and the information and advice is timeless. This version, in particular, is very visually appealing, and the book and paper is excellent quality. I highly recommend it.
