I consider myself an avid Route 66 enthusiast. I have explored many abandoned segments in several states. When I first saw this book for sale I was very exited to take a look inside. I am well pleased with the amazing research and photography that has been compiled in this book. The explanation of the technology and excellent pictures are a couple of many aspects of the book that stand out. I collect old Route 66 maps and have all of Jim and Jerry's books. This one is as well arranged and informative as are Mr. Ross's other books. I was even fortunate enough to get an autographed edition. I found myself passing by some bridge supports in the small town of Luther, Oklahoma. For years I wondered what the original span looked like before it was replaced by modern construction. I went to Luther's town library and looked through the archives of an Oklahoma City News paper to no avail. I would stop in the town from time to time asking local residents if they knew of a photograph of the original bridge, again with no luck. The humorous end to my quest for the bridge photo ended when I opened up "Route 66 Crossings: Historic Bridges of the Mother Road". Even more humorous, and due to my lack of factoring in erosion, the bridge didn't really look at all how I had imagined.(I was thinking "Galena viaduct type of structure, when in real life, it was more like a railroad trestle times two.) I'm glad we have authors and researchers like Mr. Ross to help clarify information for us. This is definitely a book that I have opened up and read more than once. I live in Oklahoma and have near access to some of the structures that fill this book's pages. I have been inspired to revisit some of the bridges with a new interest in their structural design. The book is very well done indeed.
Its a great book, highly technical in some areas, but the photos are excellent, and locations very easy to understand. I am making yet another trip to the Mother Road in October, Chicago to Tulsa, OK, and have some of the lesser known bridges on my list of have-to-see. We have seen most of the remaining big bridges (Devil's Elbow, etc.) but the smaller ones are sometimes harder to find, and harder still to identify. This book should be the best guide out there.
For people who love the details of Route 66 travel or history this beautiful book is s must. Lovely photos, maps, and thumbnail descriptions of each bridge- past and present - present a picture that is unmatched.
This is a great book! If you love Route 66, old bridges, or both -- you'll enjoy this book. It's hard covered and larger in size. I great coffee table book.
