I bought about a dozen cigar books recently and have read each of them over a couple months. This one is dry and has no photos. Much prefer the glossy books (which most cigars book are) with photos that support what's in the text. Most of the other books show quite a bit more of the author's passion and experience with cigars as well. All in all, I found this nowhere near as good as most reviewers said when compared with the other cigar books out there (by Shanken, Davidoff, etc.).
I fine this book a fun read but still in the business to teach you the things that you need to know about cigars. The author of this book set out to keep you reading and finishing the book by making it non-formal. It is serious at times and then it has a sort of humor to it also. Just like a fine cigar the author made you savor what you are reading and teaching you from head to foot what you are getting into.I do have to say this and it is the only thing that i found wrong with the book. It can be a little repreatious at times but i think that the author was wanted you to remember some important information that you needed to remember more that other things in the book. I would have to say reading this book is like smoking a premium cigar because it is wrote in the style of how you would start, smoke and then end the process of enjoying a great book. The book is worth buying because it tell you most of the things that you need to know about the making of the cigar, the things that you need as tools for smoking and to give you the most knowleght that you need into the fact of buying a bad cigar and wasting your money on cigar that make you sick vs the ones that you would smoke everyday. I loved the book and I have bought some good cigars from what i have learned in the book.
I would consider myself somewhere between a novice and an experienced cigar smoker. While I went into this book already knowing a fair amount about cigars, this book was FULL of wonderful information that I never knew.Like most "For Dummies" and "Idiot's Guide" books, this book was not actually written for idiots. It is intelligently written, but the language is easy and fun to follow, with plenty of pictures for guidance. By the time you finish this book (and trust me, once you start it, you will not want to put it down until you finish it), you will know more than most other cigar smokers, and you will definitely know enough to be able to walk into a cigar store knowing exactly what to look for.Whether you aren't sure which end you're supposed to light, or you're a veteran smoker who just wants to learn a little more about the history or construction of cigars, you will love this book!
It has ALL the information you will ever really need. It covers cigar smoking from stem to stern! So far I have read it twice this month since finding it. I'm not an expert, but I would consider myself an intermediate with years of practice.Gage has another cigar book that I've labelled as the 2nd best book to have if you are a serious cigar smoker. Be sure to check it out. It's "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Choosing Cigars." Naturally there is some of this in the current book I'm discussing, but this second book takes the subject further.Gage is an engaging and informative writer. You will not be disappointed in choosing either of his books . . . well, unless you're trying to be a cigar snob!Owen M. McKinney
This book was well written, but I think it may have been too basic for me.The author puts a jovial tone to much of his writing which made the read enjoyable, and if you are new to cigars you will probably get a lot out of this book. I am probably an intermediate smoker, meaning I have been smoking cigars for years but never really tried to 'study' up on them. If you are like me, if you want to learn more of cigars, you probably just want to try different smokes and keep your own journal to see what you like. You may not get much out of this book. However if you are new to cigars, this is a great introductory book.
I purchased this book for my cigar lounge mini library section my customers love the book they first pick it up and say I am not an idiot but I really want to read this lol
This book has a lot of information for the novice cigar enthusiast - which I am. I have been collecting and smoking for a few years now, but the information contained in here was very apt to 'straighten' me out. The only complaint I have is the boxes that adorn almost every page of text. They more often than not contained the exact same statement that I just read in the paragraph before glancing over to see the 'extra' information. Along with that, some of the paragraphs restated, verbatim, the previous paragraph - but sometimes just paraphrase it. Without the ultra-redundancy this book would have been stellar. With it, it was a bit annoying. It did not, however, take away from the main aim of this book: Educating the novice cigar smoker.I would recommend this book if you are looking at starting a new obsession.
This book provides a fairly deep look into cigars. Much of the information is available elsewhere but the author adds a few unique ideas and concepts that may stimulate some new pairings with your favorite smoke.Based on my experience, I would have to disagree regarding aging of cigars. The author does not think that aging makes any difference. Chemically, perhaps not, from a taste standpoint, my experience is rest or aging will make a good cigar richer and smoother. But may favorite humidor is not a ziplock baggie. If you enjoy cigars, and you should, this is a fun read.
