Hope many people, in health care, read Dr. Cochran's book. A lot of worthwhile thoughts and ideas.
My review is from the prospective of a patient. I am not a doctor but have the experience of 89 years of living. First this book should be read slowly. There is just so much information. Most important to me is an excellent view of the big picture and not just that but of a moving picture. Times are changing and I feel I am up to date, for now. As a prospective patient I am a "Partner" in this changing health care industry and I feel I have a better understanding of what needs to be done to keep health care in the hands of professionals and to the extent possible our of the hands of those bureaucrats in that central location. I hope this becomes required reading in medical schools.
I was privileged to be able to interact with Dr. Cochran as a business associate, and I assumed that his successful leadership was innate: he was bright, funny, humble, enthusiastic, concerned about the team (not just himself). I should have expected (but didn't expect) that he would not just believe that he was a naturally good leader, but that he would work on it, study leadership seriously and distill those aspects that he found most successful into this inspirational manual that can be read all at once or saved as a reference for tough moments in leadership. As a non-physician, I was struck by his appeal to the healing character present in almost every physician, but asking physicians to move beyond the traditional role of healer as diagnostician and treatment provider into the broader role of accepting patients as partners in the healing process, and having physicians see themselves as responsible for the entire health care delivery system, including its costs.
