The book is about this world tour of aces/jokers/nats to view conditions of those affected by the Wild Card virus in other countries. So the events of the book take place in these various countries. And for every story told, You have to suffer from at least two that suck. So let's get started:They spent a painfully long and boring chapter explaining a revolution led by a pair of twin brothers who think they are reincarnations of old gods. They spend a couple chapters building up this villain Nur al-Allah, whom I pegged as the main villain of the book. Sadly, He isn't. And after a brief confrontation with him, Nur al-Allah and the brothers simply disappear and are never brought up again. Mind you this all happens in the first 1/4-1/3 of the book so that still leaves a lot of ground to cover. Don't worry though because I haven't even started with the junk chapters that fill that ground. We have a King Kong knock-off story about a giant ape going on a rampage and the team has to fight him. We have a lame excuse to reintroduce Fortunato, who is a great character but is really given the poor end of the stick here. The reprint added story with Lady Black was a huge swing and a miss as well. The good thing, however, is that not all hope is lost. This book does have a couple of amazing stories in it that make it worthwhile. The reprint added story "Warts and All" was great. "Puppets" is my favourite chapter of the book and a great way to properly use Hartmann. The true stand out piece of the book is "The Journal of Xavier Desmond" - A constant interlude chapter that explains the tour and its events as written in the Journal of Xavier Desmond, a joker who is dying of cancer. It's a bitter and beautiful story when told in full and a real highlight here.Overall, The potential is there but they still need to work on editing these filler chapters down. The good thing is that the book ends with some of it's best chapters thus ending it on a pretty decent high note. It's just the journey there is a tough one to get through.

I have to admit, I was looking forward to reading about how the wildcard virus affected the rest of the world, and I guess a fact finding tour is a decent way to work it into the universe, but the premise seemed forced. Maybe the authors intended it that way; or maybe I'm a bit to cynical, but it seems like there would be a more creative way to fit Hartman in with the rest of the wildcard supers.I liked the ideas that the book seemed to be reaching for...but in most cases the writing seemed flat and the tie-ins between the episodes felt awkward as well. I found myself rolling my eyes at some of the Diamond entries. What really interested me was the possibility of some of the storylines where they are not shoehorned into the world of Tachyon and company. The idea of a joker nation in central america and the Russian superagent seem like they could really take off if explored further. I'm hoping that they are in future books.

I liked that there was some attempt to rehabilitate Jack Braun, although it did not get resolved favorably.

My son is loving this strange series full of odd fantasy characters, villains and heroes. He's super picky about what he reads. He continues to ask for the next book. :) Not a book for kids!

Gotta love these for what they are, a mind vacation, and I do. I have most of these in paperback, and wish they'd release the whole series on Kindle. Wait, maybe not...$$$😉

Read this series and follow ups when they were started in the '80s. Ordered large edition by accident, wanted regular paperback. Too excited by the reissue! "Real World" altered humans with oftentimes extraordinary abilities. Recommended for people who like character driven stories.

I enjoyed the books stories and different writers blend , which was harmonius.I look forward to reading some of the spin offs whicch I sense will result from this collaboration. Thankyou all.

Admittedly I'm not in the target demographic. That said, there's very few characters that I care about. Therefore, after reading the first 4 books in the Wildcard series, it's time to move on.
