3.5 starsA young, unmarried couple (29/31) arrive at a Bed and Breakfast in Gettysburg on the last weekend in November. Their relationship has been strained of late. The BnB is run by Kitty (72) and is occasionally visited by her friend Genevieve (85). The first act is a bit slow and a tad strange (the couple talk about their bizarre fears and idiosyncrasies), but the second and third acts deliver a strong pay off.This play uses cell phones and text messages very well - how they distract and erode trust. An iphone is probably the most important prop in the play. Ms. Baker delivers a few lessons about romantic relationships to the audience.A set designer would have a field day with the downstairs parlor in the BnB, where all of the action occurs. The room is covered with tchotchkes and other ornaments.

Baker's most recent play (as of this writing) is a quietly devastating tour de force. I finished reading the play, and then immediately read it again. What Baker accomplishes with such a small cast of characters is the incredible range of human emotion from the enraged to the quotidian to the epiphanic.Since I'm squirreled away in Memphis, I doubt I'll ever get to see this play. But reading it was enough for me.

I'm a huge Annie Baker fan! One of my favorite plays I have read is "The Aliens", also by Baker, and "John" is definitely on my top ten list of favorite plays. I couldn't quite understand when critics were calling it a modern ghost story, until I reread it and understood that the ghosts were more like skeletons in the closet. The story's ghosts are in essence the past of the characters haunting them, causing rifts between them. Plus, this play has one of the most cool intermission moments I have ever read. It's so unique, in character, and wonderfully important. This play is powerful, spooky, and a lot of fun! I hope that I will be blessed enough to be in it myself or get to watch it live!

Annie Baker is a new favorite playwright of mine. This play unfolds very much like a ghost story, without actual ghosts, just haunted people. Much of that atmosphere is due to the location of the play, which is a perfect match to the story. I kept imagining the dolls, staring out, unblinking - such an great way to unsettle an audience. Will be reading more of Ms Baker.

Annie Baker is brilliant. Buy this play and enjoy. She is the leading playwright of her generation.

Loved the play. The playwright is a genius and love her other works. Seller sent me a USED copy when I purchased a new copy though. There was writing on some of the pages :( But a great play!

I enjoyed this in spite of some WTF moments. Maybe those work better when seeing the play performed?

Best play I have read in a while. Masterful work by an already phenomenal playwright. The layers that exist in this play are amazing! Good job!!
