I understand that this is a classic of French literature, and I'm not saying that I could have written anything better, especially in French, but this love triangle focusing on a young primadonna becomes somewhat tiresome with its "lather-rinse-repeat" motif of love, hate, loathing...But it's a classic.

I must say Simone De Beauvoir is an eclectic and prolific writer. In these short stories, she details in each and every emotion the characters feel at the moment .

Stunning writing, the 3 stories are so different, but keep you interested the whole time!

Nice reading, pages run quickly for a mediocre reader.

Extreemly good, as you would expect.

I kept thinking that this "novel" is actually autobiographical; but (fortunately) not the ending. DeBeauvoir's struggles with her insecurities are made painfully clear. In re-reading some of the episodes, I had a different opinion of the young woman. Maybe she really was innocent and accepting of the arrangement. Simone needed to understand "compersion", a term in the polyamory community. They all accepted the open arrangement; but Simone apparently felt that her position as the "primary" was threatened. The ending was troubling for me. Who really is the evil one, eh? Definitely worth reading and debating for a while.

Yasss.

Beauvoir is a sublime writer of fiction. Her perspective as a woman is mature and compelling.

Vol. II differs from Vol. I in that it includes not just alpine routes but sport climbs and crag climbs--great for folks who want to take their rock-gym skills outside. The book also rates the approach to each climb from the car, whether it be a 10-minute walk or a grueling, two-day hike to a frozen waterfall. It's a practical consideration, as some of the approaches are more physically demanding than the actual route. Climbs covered begin in the southern Cascades, dominated by volcanoes Hood, Adams, and Rainier, and move northward to Snoqualmie Pass, with its easily accessible sport climbs and occasionally tough alpine routes. The guide finally moves into the North Cascades. Here, the mountains lose their volcanic character and take on the glacial-carved ruggedness of spots like Forbidden Peak and Mount Fury. JIM NELSON, a native Northwesterner, is a professional mountain guide, climber, and mountain-shop owner. He has spent more than thirty years climbing year-round in the Cascades, the past nineteen of those teaching, guiding, and advising on equipment. Nelson has guided clients of all abilities up diverse routes in virtually every corner of the range during all seasons. He has established more than a dozen first ascents in the Cascades. Nelson's experience climbing in the Cascades amounts to decades of exhaustive research for Selected Climbs in the Cascades, Volumes 1 & 2. He is uniquely qualified to assess and evaluate the relative merits of the thousands of routes in the range. He is also a photographer whose mountain images have graced catalog covers and appeared in books and magazines. I live in the Portland area, I'm absolutely in love with alpine mountaineering, and consequently I spend most of my non-rainy weekends out climbing in the Cascades. These books (both volume 1 & 2) are my 'go to' guides for climbing route beta in the Northern Cascades. As an Oregonian, it is a bit frustrating that, per these guides, Cascade climbing begins at Mt. Hood and moves north to Canada. Of course in a sense this is fully justified (except, perhaps, in the case of Mt. Jefferson), as the best peaks are in Washington.What's really nice about these books is that it's not a collection of easy 'dog' routes, or a collection of super difficult "hard man" routes. Rather, it's simply a collection of climbs the authors find noteworthy for some reason. In that regard the selections are far from comprehensive, and largely reflect the aesthetics of the authors. Nevertheless, they have very good taste. The detail on descriptions and route photography is great. I look here before going online for beta.

This is one of the most well done guidebooks I have ever seen. Some of my friends refer to the first volume of this book as "The Bible of Northwest Climbing." This one is destined for the same accolades.The book itself is made of heavy stock paper - something that you can throw around in your car and not worry about too much. The black and white pictures are awesome and the route descriptions are well written. Hardware suggestions appear to be appropriate and the permit information looks good too.This book describes 96 new routes and includes crag climbs (something which was not covered in the first edition). Perhaps the best thing about this book is that most of the climbs are somewhat off of the beaten track and not the most well known. Every self-respecting climber in the northwest should own both of these books - they're guaranteed to get you excited and help you pick your next trip.

I've spent a year dabbling in the Stock photography business with some success/sales but nothing ever Earth shattering. I came across Steve’s book and gave it a read. The book is concise and chock full of valuable information I wish I had when I started Stock Photography over a year ago. Over the course of the last year I've been mainly selling at one agency. After reading his book I learned that diversifying (i.e. working with many agencies) is a better overall strategy (avoid the “all eggs in one basket” model). The problem was some of these other agencies rejected my initial submissions for various reasons which really baffled me (especially since another agency accepted them). In the book, Steve outlines several agencies and explains what they like and more importantly do not like about photo submissions. A week after buying this book my agency list has expanded from 2 to now 7. I have more than I can handle at the moment. In addition, I have learned that my portfolio needs a little fine tuning to make my photos more acceptable with most agencies.Other areas worth highlighting:1) Keywording and Descriptions- pros and cons on how to do this right2) Workflow suggestions- good example of how to tackle the process without going crazyIf you’re interested in stock photography, give this book a try. I’m recommending it to people I know in a local photography club. Good Stuff!

I ordered this book and read it in the same day. It is full of very good information. Many photographers don't want to share "their" secrets, but Steve Heap includes as much as he can. There are links to resources he uses and recommends. When there is more than one option, he explains how each works and gives his rationale for selecting the one he currently employs.This book is a bargain! If you are interested in getting started in stock photography, I can't think of a better starting point.Nice job Steve!

I got many good ideas from the book and though I've been selling stock for many years will profit from this book (literally). I hope the author will continue to provide updates.

I really enjoyed this book for the detail in the mechanics of taking, organizing and submitting stock photos. I've read a few books and by far this was my favorite. He's not trying to tell you how to be a photographer, he is trying to tell you how an organized photographer handles the sort of volume it takes to make an impact in the Stock Photo world.

I am a beginner, and was looking for some guidance on what stock sites to chose as I'm getting started. This is a very comprehensive guide, with extremely helpful suggestions. This photographer is an analytical type, and he has been tracking his successes, so he shows you how he arrived at his conclusions, which is another plus. He recommends a number of sites for stock photographers, and critiques each one, regarding their strengths and challenges. I highly recommend this primer on stock photography, I am enjoying re-reading it and taking notes about tools he uses that will be useful to me in the future.

This is no way to get rich, but is worth doing for some photographers and reading this book is the best way to get started. I would recommend it to anyone thinking about getting started in microstock sales. This is a short reference book that you can read in just a few hours then use it as a reference as you get going. Well worth the money.

This is the nitty gritty on getting started in a field that is not as easy to work as it seems. I spent 8 years learning my trade writing unpublished novels before I got my first two book novel deal with Random House, and I will say that this is not nearly as hard, but it's up there, folks, and this book gives you the inside scoop on how to make it into a tightly managed arena. Some of it is so technical on work flow etc. that I find that now that I am beginning to have photos accepted by multiple sites I have to go back and take notes from the book to make things go more smoothly. Kudos. I give it five stars.

The most comprehensive book on the subject of stock photography. Thank you Dan for the loads of information you provide, making it easier to navigate through what might feel overhwelming. It is your book that made everything very clear. This is a must have book for stock photographers.

What a great book! For anyone who has ever debated their favorite teams "all time" list, this makes for a very engaging and thought through look at your Dream Team. This book was well researched and the author does a nice job of providing his perspective on the tough choices made by position. I especially liked the addition of the different lineups depending on the pitching match up for each team!

This is the best baseball book written in the last few years. Over 600 pages, current through the 2018 season, and a great price. Will be using this to create my all-time teams for my computer baseball game. Would love to see something like this in other sports.

Author Tom Stone establishes a solid, multi-faceted approach to selecting all-time dream teams for baseball's 30 franchises. As a result, Now Taking the Field is thoughtful, insightful and interesting.In the introduction, Stone, who worked on the book for 20 years, offers how his project differs from past all-time dream teams. Stone uses WAR (Wins Above Replacement) as a starting point for his selections. Stone provides a good definition of WAR. He also supplements WAR with W3 (a player's top 3 WAR seasons) and W/G (WAR per game).Stone, however, also uses traditional statistics, such as batting average, home runs, RBI and ERA, as well as the newer OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging average) and WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched). He considers post-season performances and awards.In addition to selecting an all-time team for each franchise, Stone compares his picks with those in the past (one of the most interesting features of the book), selects starting lineups vs. left and right-handed pitchers, establishes a depth chart, lists players with WAR seasons of 8 or higher and selects a franchise player of all-time.Stone also acknowledges the PED era in his selections, choosing to take production numbers at face value. He does state if a player was suspected of using PEDs.Unlike some past selectors of all-time dream teams, Stone includes 19th century players. He acknowledges the challenge of doing so (different era, different rules). I personally think it's almost impossible to compare 19th century players with 20th and 21st century players.Stone chooses to select one all-time dream team per franchise. Thus, the St. Louis Browns/Baltimore Orioles get one all-time dream team. I prefer separate all-time dream teams.This is an interesting 600-page book (each franchise averages 20 pages). But there probably isn't as much fodder for arguments as one might think. Fans may quibble here and there, but there are no glaringly questionable choices. Stone is thorough in his considerations for the all-time dream teams, and he seems to treat the different eras equally.Baseball fans, particularly those who are statistically oriented, will enjoy this book.

Now Taking the Field is book that can be read from start to finish or chapter by chapter. The research and insights that Tom Stone has provided as well as the overall depth of knowledge for each team are outstanding. After the Introduction, I read up on my favorite team and was delighted to hear names of players I hadn't thought about in years. Talking about bringing me back to childhood!Part of the appeal of the book is the methodology used to select these All-Time Dream Teams: WAR, Traditional Statistics, Awards, and Postseason Performance. That along with factual data make for an entertaining read.I would highly recommend purchasing a few copies; one for yourself and a few others for all the baseball fans you probably know that would appreciate this book!

But don't take my word for it. Buy it as a great gift for yourself -- if you happen to love the game as much as the book's author does, or imagine you do. But I doubt it: Tom Stone's labor of love was two decades in the making. His passion for baseball, sustained for twenty years, has generated an amazing work certain to become and remain a standard reference for sports writers, commentators, players, and fans for decades to come.

I thought the author did a great job at presenting his choices for all time rosters. Even better was the comparison to previous works and where his opinion differed. My only complaint is that I felt the author leaned on a few phrases a bit too much.
