By 1944, the Japanese Imperial Navy was husbanding its remaining aircraft carriers, hoping for a decisive battle that save its Pacific empire. The invasion of the Marianas by the U.S., led by its own Task Force 58 aircraft carrier force, was the opportunity Japan had been waiting for. Over a handful of days in June, 1944, the two great fleets would maneuver in the Philippine Sea, and strike..."The Philippine Sea 1944" is an Osprey Campaign Series book, well authored by Mark Stille, with illustrations by Jim Laurier. The author lays out the opposing forces and their leaders and plans. The heart of the narrative is the actual Battle of the Philippine Sea, as the two fleets probed for one another and then launched their respective strikes. There is an excellent selection of period photographs, maps, and battle diagrams breaking down the sequence of events at a level of detail that is easy to understand. This reviewer was particularly interested in the surprising recovery rate for the last U.S. strike, as planes returned in the dark, low on fuel and sometimes damaged. The author puts significant effort into critiquing the respective commanders, their plans and the execution of those plans. The critique is quite rather harsh in both cases. The reasons why are likely to be of interest to students of the conflict. Well recommended to that audience.
Not so bad, but I would say overpriced (for 96 pages). Now, you probably know that going in, so let's be fair. But, on the system here, is it okay? Yes, it's okay,This is a pretty straightforward statistics and equipment list, with some nice analysis of the battle plans and that sort of thing. A quick overview of personalities. For me, the best part was the explanations, however brief, of two phenomena: (1) I had often read about how poorly trained the Japanese pilots were, but this is the first time I had seen that explained, along with a comparison of American pilot training; (2) I had also gotten the idea that the Japanese navy had never quite let go of this whole "decisive battle" concept, and the author indicates in some detail that, yep, that was the case.I got the book because I needed a break from my novel-length readings, and it accomplished that.
Solid research from Japanese and U.S. archives, sound historical judgments, and excellent graphics of aerial combat
This book is outstanding and really breaks down the battle for both sides. I highly recommend this book on this subject.
