Call of Cthulhu takes a game that has existed under a different rules system for some time, and adapts it to the d20 system (like Dungeons and Dragons). The d20 system is okay for just about anything, but is probably not as well suited to the subject matter (the cosmic horror stories of HP Lovecraft) as various other systems out there. That said, there are some really compelling reasons to check it out.For one, the non-rules elements in the book, the storytelling advice and the explanation of the Cthulhu Mythos, are worth the price of admission. There's some really interesting and clearly rendered thoughts in here that can affect any game you want to play.For another, the d20 system is an easier buy-in for many people who are familiar with D&D. Asking them to learn a new system is a big ask, but this game is one book and it works the way they expect an rpg to work. The rules are stripped down of many of the D&D elements and offer only two options for advancing your character (offense and defense); the rest is choosing skills. Magic is handled separately, and psychic powers through a minimal selection of feats. Sanity is ported from the older CoC game and includes a lot of interesting actual psychiatric information. This very simple and modular approach allows you to use what you want and change or add other things. So the game, even through the limitations of d20's linear advancement and oversimplified combat, can work pretty well.There are guidelines for adapting characters from the other CoC game, and from mixing material between CoC and D&D (or Pathfinder, if you swing that way). The book has exceptionally high production values; the cover will creep you out, and so will the book itself, where instead of being rendered in columns, text is presented as slanted opposing triangular structures that manage to be readable while creating a Lovecraftian notion of forbidden geometry. The writing and artwork are strong throughout. This game is long out of print, but still worth picking up in the best condition you can (and at the best price you can); it works.

This is, in my entire (brief) history of purchasing RPG's, my favorite book to date. That should tell you enough to BUY THIS BOOK, but I'll elaborate for the folks who don't want to sift through the other, 2000 word reviews.Firstly, the book itself is solid, good quality, well-written, exceptionally well-presented, and designed to be easy and fun to use.Secondly, the game is, supposing you can find people interested in its style of gaming (semi-serious horror roleplay,) an extremely fun, interesting and exciting game.Third, the book uses the most prolific RPG system around, Wizards of the Coast's D&D 3rd edition+ d20 system, which, while it has its flaws, is accessible and ubiquitous. Some folks have nits to pick with it, and their concerns may have grounds, but frankly, a game is a game is a game, and this one plays well with the system they present.Finally, this book has everything you need to play. Everything. The included adventures (two!) are top-notch, and full of juicy details and tidbits, much like the rest of the book. It has rules to cover almost any imaginable situation, and ideas a-plenty, including a recommended reading section. I simply cannot recommend it highly enough for any fan of role-playing and the d20 system, the horror genre or Lovecraft's writing.

This book is amazing! The character creation system is very flexible. The magic system is very unique. It has an excellent combat system and some cool gear to equip your characters with. And add a heavy dose of creepy crawlies, undead, and Old Ones to keep things interesting. I also like the appendices on conversions from the Chaosium and Dungeons and Dragons systems. I would give it 10 stars if I could. The only thing that could make it better is if they made an updated version using the 5th edition version of the d20 system.

I bought this because I just wanted for my collection.It is interesting, but trying to meld the D100 system with a D20 system is odd at best, which leaves each side wondering and wanting a little more.It was a great effort to meld the two and I applaud them for that, yet the casual fan will want to stick to the other systems and leave this one for people like me who just want it to collect it.

Helpful book, but I really wish they would've expanded on the items list for roleplaying purposes! I had to b.s. my way through corn and mason jar prices for one of my players who is playing a bootlegger in a 1920's campaign. 😑 Also, more artifacts/tomes! Had to buy a separate 1st edition c.o.c. book for these things.

WoTC version of CoC is a great gaming system for those who like a bit more grit than DnD and are familiar with d20's. This is the only hard-cover I could find and for the price I wouldn't call it a steal but it is a solid buy. Mine arrived in mint condition.

This book are a great resource for CoC keepers (or Lovecraft's readears). If you don't like D20 system, just don't use it! The "Gamemastering", "Cthulhu Mythos", and descriptions are great and the look & feel are amazing! For the D&D RPG's people: kick Cthulhu!Call of Cthulhu (d20 Edition Horror Roleplaying, WotC)

At some point you realize the entire book is fluff. This guy might be good at learning languages, but he does a terrible job of communicating his method to others. I started skimming about 50% of the way through. Before this I read Fluent Forever based on reviews and that book blows this one completely out of the water. @Benny, if you are reading this: I found your website first and was stocked. I had bookmarked your premium service to buy, but after reading your book, I'm 100% confident I would be disappointed by that purchase too. I am no longer considering it nor is your website a resource for me any longer. As this review is so negative, I will state that I am not compensated by Fluent Forever, it's just a better book, hands down. I hope that I save some people time and money with this review.

This book really wasn't helpful at all. The gist of the book is that you immerse yourself in that language for 6 months by spending all your time around those who speak that language. First of all, what if there isn't a community near you that speaks the language? Second of all, is it really safe to go into that community as a stranger where you do not speak the language at all? I rated this a 2 star for his ability to make money from a catchy title. Don't waste your money. Fortunately I got mine through Kindle Unlimited as a free download.

Well, it's clear Benny is not a professional writer, but I knew that when purchasing the book. Most of the beginning chapters are all fluff-- talking about his personal history in language learning, dispelling language-learning myths, talking about how anyone can learn a language if you're just not lazy, blah blah blah. Nothing is backed up with science, and anyone that has studied language acquisition professionally will be able to call him out at a few points. (He once states that babies are at no cognitive advantage in language-learning to adults-- this is not true, their neural circuits are flexible at that age and stiffen over time, making it harder to get the brain to work that way again.) However, if you've ever tried to learn a language before, you know it really is just that you get what you put into it (in terms of studying and practicing), and when used as more of a motivational book instead of a methods book, I would actually recommend it. He is very passionate about what he does, and it's as obvious as it is infectious. Whenever I don't feel like studying, I'll read a chapter or two and it completely reignites my motivation.

If you’re interested in learning a language, this is a great introduction how to hack it faster than you think. I speak Spanish with my girlfriend and my spoken skills are way better than reading or writing but that’s the point. I can communicate. Read this book and stop believing false statements about learning a new language.

Benny's language learning philosophy is sound, IMO. While I haven't had a problem learning more than one language at a time (I just recently cut the number I was learning at once from 7 to, currently, 4), I can see his logic. You really don't have to be a genius to be a polyglot. But like Benny says, you have to be passionate about it and stick with it. If you're not determined, it's not likely that you'll get far. Thanks for your insight, Benny. Great stuff!

The theme of this book is speaking with others, which is good advice. Though the book has a good list of words to help with conversation and helpful grammar for many languages. If you have never studied languages before I do recommend. I was just expecting a little more.

The book is organized well, but the material is basically a repetition of the same stuff over and over, with plenty of examples of what he did. While the stuff could be new to those just starting out, to those already in the language learning game, it's not worth it

While I did learn a few helpful things the book was mostly an advertising pitch for the author's products. The “links” to helpful information lead to a complex pathway through sales pitches to finally, well, practically nothing. The useful parts would have made a nice 20 page pamphlet.

I really liked the detailed color snapshots of the various types of fractional currency in this guide. I also found the history of the fractional currency within the guide very interesting. The guide contains a great breakdown on rarity of the various notes and distribution and grading with the listed value. This is a good resource for anyone interested in fractional currency collection and can help people who are relatively inexperienced to understand that value of various notes they have and want to invest in.

quality of Kindle edition is poor and does not provide the proper resolution than what is shown online in the free preview version.Amazon needs to provide better scans of Kindle editions where the picture clarity is important.

Very informative!! Has all the information. Have not seen a better fractional currency book. This is the best. Has a lot of detail. It is like the Bible of fractional currency.

I am *so glad* this book is back in print! It gently introduces the von Trapp family traditions throughout the liturgical year, but told in a beautifully rich, story-like style. The topic could easily become dry, but the tone is such that one can imagine oneself sitting with Maria von Trapp over tea, learning how to live the liturgical year in a large family.Physically, the book is sturdy, with glossy pages in color. A very high-quality product that I can absolutely see myself gifting to my children as they grow up and start their families.Two things I wish were slightly different:1. Some hymns spill over onto a second page, requiring a page turn, when minor edits would have made it possible to slightly change the order of hymns to keep them easier to sing together as a family (or! Make small hymn booklets available for purchase/download)2. Quite a few of the hymns/antiphons have a Latin text that I wish were also included, both for reference and for actual use. I doubt many who are singing the "Alma Redemptoris Mater" are using the English words provided, "Blessed Mother of the Savior."

This book- I've been waiting to find a copy for years! The original has been out of print and used copies are quite pricey, so I am so glad that this new edition is available. I grew up loving The Sound of Music and there are lots of family jokes about wanting to be Maria von Trapp, so reading the real Maria's warm "voice" carry through in this text as she describes and shares her family culture is such a delight to read.This printing is a lovely hardback book with glossy pages and little original illustrations. Maria narrates how her family lived out the liturgical year, keeping traditions that reflected their Catholic faith, as well as Austrian customs and family celebrations. She shares ideas for decorating, teaching, and prayer for all the holidays and holy days. Each section also has recipes and music. And my favorite chapter, called "Our Life- A Feast," details how the family celebrated the unique and "ordinary" events of life- birthdays, Sacraments, graduations, etc. It gives a lovely little glimpse into their lives and is inspires me to build and hold traditions and the collective memory of a family.No matter your age or family situation there is something to be learned from and enjoyed in this book. So much of the faith can be woven into our daily life, from the way we decorate to the food we eat, those actions tell the story of what we believe and pass it on to a new generation.

There are lots of liturgical living books and websites out there right now but what makes this one special is that it comes from a place of experience. Maria didn't just research these practices; she grew up with them, lived them, and passed them along. This is what distinguishes this book. She is not fumbling along trying to figure out how they might have celebrated Pentecost or Advent in years gone by, she is actually just relating her experience. I love it for that. It is so different to hear about someone's lived experience of the liturgical life than someone's learned experience of the liturgical life based on research.I think the loveliest part of the book is her descriptions of family life. Family was central to the von Trapp family so you read about the books they read, the games they played, the songs they sang, and the ways they feasted and fasted. We long for the liturgical life because it gives us community, family, and connects us to the wider Church and our faith. Maria gives us the full experience in her book. It is a rich and beautiful book of family and faith well-lived. If you own one liturgical living book, it should be this one.

This book is one of my favorites. It's not only an incredibly useful guide on traditional catholic liturgical living, but it is also an enjoyable read. Maria Von Trapp is such an enjoyable author, and the information and advice is timeless. This version, in particular, is very visually appealing, and the book and paper is excellent quality. I highly recommend it.

I thought this was a good book for someone who cannot follow simple rule of society and thinks life is just a bed of roses and their choices hurt other people. After having this type of person invade my family who thinks quite differently I knew the person who was going to read this book would have plenty of time to do so and possibly they may just change their entire outlook on life and focus on values. I think this author with his experience drove some pretty harsh words to awaken those who think the welcome wagon is going to be sitting in the parking lot when they are finally released. I am certainly glad this author found the simple things in life ere in fact the very best things.

If you are a felon and you desperately want to stay out of prison but you are struggling to find a map to guide you through the process, then please read this book. The author does a fantastic job of explaining the challenges that lye ahead while breathing inspiration to the reader.

I bought this book for Samory Monds. He is the reviewer. Lana MitchellGetting Out & Staying Out: A Black Man's Guide to Success After prison, is a good book (guide) for anyone who is in prison or who has just gotten out of prison. All of the points that Mr. Boothe makes are valid, and I think will help you to reach the goal of staying out. He, Demico Boothe, speaks about planning and having discipline, which are the only ways a man coming out of prison, Black or White, will stay out. I like that he gears the book towards Blackmen, who really need a guide on how to beat the odds. I plan, after my release, and during my current prison sentence, to implement his guide, to help me meet my goals and become a better person.

I chose this book for help with a school project. It fit the bill. The information was helpful for my need but is also helpful for someone who needs to stay out of jail. Actually, this book would be helpful for anyone who needs direction on being consistent with life. I congratulate Mr. Boothe for his efforts in helping others with his testimony.

This book was honestly difficult to suffer through. It felt like I was being talked down to by a baby boomer who thinks you can still work a summer job to pay for college and buy a house. The motivational advice is mostly cookie cutter, and the categorizing of people into four categories lends itself to very black and white language, dramatic over-generalizations, and a sense that this guy just likes to rant and has no research behind his ideas. He uses language like "losers" and "snowflake generation" and generally just makes you throw up in your mouth a little. He cites wikipedia and a definition from google... he goes on a two page rant about political correctness. Just have thanksgiving with that distant rambling uncle you've been avoiding and call it a day. Negative ten stars.

I've purchased other 3rd party camera books in the past, but this one really stands out. What I like about it is the help the author gives in setting up your camera's menus and options, along with color photos of how to do it. Great reference book, well written, and an excellent purchase.

I already own his Mastering the D7000 book, so when I upgraded cameras, I upgraded to his D7200 book. The two books are very similar, but he carefully details all the improvements in the newer model, which are many. The author does an exceptional job of describing the myriad of menu choices as well as the basic and advanced settings of this Nikon and he also clearly helped me understand the implications of one setting over another. I find this book invaluable and it is now covered with tabs and highlights. One reviewer criticized this book for not providing a course to improve creativity. Really? You need this book if you are new to this camera and/or to the Nikon menu system, and what I really like are the author's conclusions/preferences/recommendations for each setting and option. Buy another book if you want tips on being more creative in your photography.

I have used a Nikon DSLR Camera for years in my professional job. I upgraded my camera and purchased the Nikon D7200 body and kept my old lens. I purchased the "Mastering the Nikon D7200" book to help me use this camera properly. I could not understand large portions of the book. I did not understand many of the terms, and they were not defined in the book. There should have been a dictionary section at the end of the book. So, this book is for those who have advanced camera knowledge . Although I have been taking job related photographs for 50 years, it turns out that I am not an advanced user. The User's Manual (390 pages) was much more understandable and valuable to me than "Mastering the Nikon D7200". If, however, you are an advanced user, then this book might be of great value to you.

Okay. Not great. LOTS of time setting up menus, not as much taking photos. And the lack of an index is also a limitation. (I bought the Kinde version and it is not page-flip friendly.) Several times I found myself saying "how do I..." and then not finding what I was looking for after wading through one menu set up chapter after another. Well done, but it is just limited in its utility for my needs.Also, I purchased a factory refurbished camera, and the refurbed units do not include the owners manual in the packaging. I was hoping this would be a good replacement. I wound up returning this (Kindle edition) and just downloading the free pdf manual. That is likely also limited, but it's a necessity at any rate.

Still working through the book with the camera. Must have the camera in hand when reading most of the book. I am a newbie to digital cameras. I took photography classes with 35mm black and white film and bought this as my first digital camera. This book is helping with the switch. He writes it in down to earth language that is easy to understand. He tells you what all the buttons and functions are used for as well as gives helpful hints at what he recommends for settings. It is well over 500 pages long and does take time to go through.

This is exactly what you need after buying a D7200. Reading the manual can be challenging. I like the explanation of each setting then the writers choice for that setting and why. It put everything together in a very nice way. You need this book if you have a D7200.

I first discovered Darrell's work in 2009 when I received the Nikon D90 as a gift. I had decided it was time to learn how to shoot manually and figured the best place to start was with a how-to manual for the camera I owned, plus a lot of experimentation and reading on photography in general. I don't remember how I came across "Mastering the Nikon D90," but I was hooked from the beginning. Darrell's straightforward discussion of each camera feature, broken down into easy to reference sections, plus his suggested settings jump-started my learning process. "Mastering the Nikon D7000" was equally excellent, and now I am pleased to own this one.While I may also order the electronic copy of this book, I particularly enjoy having the hardcover. The book is visually pleasing and well-organized, with an extensive index. If you are familiar with the other books in the series, you will find things satisfyingly consistent. But the best part of this book is the straightforward discussion about the myriad features of the Nikon D7200, starting with initial camera set-up. There are choices to make, and Darrell makes these distinctions easy to understand. But lest you think this book is just for a beginner, it is not. Darrell manages to impart the simple information necessary to become familiar with the camera's basic features, but also delves deeper for those who are ready for or needing more in depth information, as well as including helpful links with further information.The book is thick enough to feel the satisfaction of knowing that if you read it all, you'll be light years ahead of many D7200 owners, but not so thick that you can't take it with you when you need to. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

I had a small business on ebay 10 years ago. Although it was profitable it took quite a bit of work and a lot of my personal time. I ended up letting that business go. In the last ten years I have gathered up quite a few things that I no longer want or need. I kept thinking I should post on ebay but I would dread the thought because of my experience and I ended up just giving it away or selling stuff for way less than it was worth in garage sales. I ran across this book after reading a couple other books by Richard Lowe and I am kicking myself. I was doing ebay the hard way and it is so much easier to sell on ebay than the way I had been doing. There are a lot of great tools in this book. One of the most important pieces of advice that he gave is to become a buyer first. I don't know why I didn't think of that. This way you can see what it is like on the other end and cater to that. I've already collected several items to sell and am actually excited to try this again.

I received this book yesterday, and I am disappointed. I wanted a step-by-step guide, and this book is not that. In fact, near the beginning of the book, the author tells the reader to look on eBay's website for such guidance. There is very little detail about how to use eBay. Twice in the book, author advises the seller to use eBay shipping, yet he doesn't say how to use it. The book is short- about a 30-minute read- and is self-published. I learned far more by merely reading on eBay and searching listings. I did learn to buy shipping materials in bulk, but that is about all I learned. Also, the author is very repetitive. I feel I wasted my money.

Find stuff and sell it. I wanted to get a better idea of how to get started but this author referred you back to eBay tutorials. For me, this book was a waste of time. Very simplistic.

Waste of money....guy is making money off a mediocre book which really does not tell you "Jack"

Contains very few specifics. Not very useful. Made a mistake buying it. Thought it would be more helpful in making decision to sell fixed price or auction.

Knew part of this already, but there is info that is helpful even to those who have sold on Ebay before.

Or Hines' "Radio Voices" or Smulyans' "Selling Radio" -- you'll know exactly where this book comes from (this book is like an extension of these books - only up to modern day). I am very pleased that we are seeing more published books on radio in the academy, however, the majority of these are coming from the cultural studies perspective -- I guess because any quantitative study is thought to be largely the purveyance of the industry. So, it's a qualitative romp through the garden of radio past and the impact the medium has had on the American Psyche that perhaps we have overlooked due to our (new?) obsession with television. It's a step above the general "I recall when radio was great..." books due to the caliber of essayists in the thing. WHile it's not extremely original, the writing is superb and offers some more insights into the medium of radio. A great biography of a major American business leader. Cornelius rose to become one of the wealthiest men in the United States by the time of his death. He began in a family of very modest means. Step by step, he rose into the highest echelon of American entrepreneurs.At the outset of his working life, he was just another employee. But, with time, hard work, and some luck, he developed a presence in the ferry boat business in the New York City area. Early on, he found a benefactor--and in this manner became a modest player in the great Supreme Court decision--Gibbons v. Ogden which struck down monopoly contracts between states and the shipping/passenger water industry. He began to develop a greater presence in steamboats and shipping. This eventually led him to operate transatlantic ships and transportation from the east coast to California--with an overland link through Nicaragua.Even as he was at his peak in the steamboat business, he turned his interest to railroads, which had become a major sector in the United States business galaxy. By his death, he had accumulated massive wealth. The book does an excellent job in providing details of the evolution of his business career--as well as his private life.Among issues discussed that are worth considering: while he could play hardball in the business world (his Wall Street machinations are well described), he also developed efficiencies in his businesses leading him to be able to deliver good service at a lower cost than his competitors. This is fascinating in that many major businessmen used their position in the market to increase prices and increase profits. Poignant are some of the challenges faced bu his family, such as a son who was a gambling addict.Overall, a wonderful telling of the tale of Cornelius Vanderbilt, the "admiral."

This impressive biography of Cornelius Vanderbilt is more than a biography. The reader can trace the development of American economic history from 1800-1875 through the life of Vanderbilt. Hamilton wanted government directly involved in the nation’s economy. From Jefferson up to the Civil War, the strong trend was to remove the federal government from the economy and open the door to individual freedom to innovate and compete. This allowed Vanderbilt, probably one of the most resourceful and clever capitalist entrepreneurs who has ever lived, the freedom to start with a Staten Island ferry that would eventually lead to one of the most massive accumulations of personal wealth and control of capital enterprises of all time. Ironically, the freedom that the Jeffersonians and Jacksonians wanted led to the massive control of the economy not by the government but by incredibly wealthy individuals and corporations.Stiles’ biography is an enormously detailed book. It becomes increasingly technical in the economic sense as Vanderbilt moves from steamboats (and his fascinating adventures in Nicaragua) to railroads. Stiles should get enormous credit not only for his superb research, much better than earlier biographers of Vanderbilt, but also for his objectivity about the man and his ability to make as clear as possible to the average reader the often complex financial issues of Vanderbilt’s life. It is easy to see why this book won awards. Stiles not only gives us a man’s life (both personal life and business life) but how the American economic system developed in the 19th century.Stiles is also a smooth writer. Chapters are divided into reasonable chunks separated by double spacing and the transitions and paragraph structures throughout the book are fluent and easy to follow. If I have any complaint (and it is a small one), it is that many many times Stiles ends these chapter subdivisions with either a cliffhanger sentence or some other “catch” line for the sake of dramatic continuity. This is unnecessary given the overall power of the book and Vanderbilt’s life. Except for that quibble, the book is a biographical tour de force that showed me not just the life of a brilliant, often cold, but complex man but also how the economic history of America as we know it today originated.

Yes, he was the first tycoon, but what's more important is that this is a story about a man who started with nothing and built his wealth with very hard work. This is the story of early America, which is made up of people from other countries who came to this country to make a life in the new world. Vanderbilt's life started with very little education - he had dropped out of school at an early age. Yet his thinking process throughout his life is equivalent to what we would expect from someone with an MBA. He used common sense and long-term thinking whenever he made decisions. What did it cost him to make his millions? Mostly his family paid for his success. He worked constantly. But he figured out how to come out ahead of his competitors. He even figured out how to get across Central America to reach the Pacific Ocean from the Atlantic without going around South America. He realized that this shortcut would allow him to get items to California so much quicker; definitely quicker than going across country, which could also be quite dangerous. This biography does an excellent job of describing how he built his success on boats and ships and finished with railroads. It also does an excellent job of describing how he related to other people, including his family members. He wasn't necessarily well liked, but when you finish reading the book, you have to have some respect for the man and his methods and how he built an empire from absolutely nothing. It's a very long book, but every page had so much to say and well worth all the words used to tell the story. I've always thought of the Vanderbilt's through the Biltmore Mansion in Asheville, NC, and Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, but this was only part of the end of his life - there was so much more to the man.
