From page viii of the Introduction: "After giving the matter much thought, I decided that every WPF programmer should have a solid foundation in writing WPF applications entirely in code. For that reason, Part I of this book shows you how to write complete WPF programs using C#."When I read that, I knew that I was finally holding the right book. Strip away the XAML magic and the autogenerated code files. See how the application is actually built. Understand how the UI elements are derived, rather than just dragging an icon from the toolbox. Later when I put the XAML back in, there will be mental hooks to hang it on.Used hardcopy editions of this book are a bargain. Get your hands on one while you still can.

I've read countless WPF books cover to cover. This is my very favorite. I read it early when it first came out.The code examples are awesome. The fact that this book introduces the topic using lots of code only (no XAML) examples turned out to be more of a plus than I ever imagined. Here's why: Microsoft now has a functional programming (FP) language called F#. F# doesn't yet have any GUI designers for WPF. I had a choice: I could use a mixed language approach using C# projects to create XAML, and F# projects for "engine" type code. Or, I could do everything in pure code using F# alone. I opted for the latter, and I'm glad I did.The code-centric background I got in WPF from this book prepared me well for this. I found that I could do things in pure code combined with FP techniques that I couldn't do using a XAML + code approach. For instance, when you create WPF widgets in code, you can see all kinds of other code elements through scope (without needing annotations within XAML, and other mechanisms). You can also leverage this (to some extent) in C# by using lambdas, since lambdas can see parental scope (thus obviating the need to pass parameters). As a result of this, I find that I can be much more productive and succinct using a code only approach: it seems much easier, faster, and more natural to me.When it comes to decoupling a GUI from "code behind" (a la the MVVM pattern), perhaps binding isn't the only way. Perhaps ADTs (abstract data structures) are another approach that can be leveraged (and FP languages offer greater abilities to create ADTs than conventional languages do).In addition, I find that Charles really "gets it". He deeply understands the subject matter and can impart it to readers. For these reasons this book is my favorite WPF book. It's also the most useful, the most helpful, and the most interesting WPF book in my tool chest.

I'm only on the first chapter, so I can't say much about the book yet, but I have noticed a problem with the formatting of the code examples. I have the Kindle version of the book, and I'm using a Kindle DX. In the first chapter, the code sample InheritTheApp does not fit all on one page. This is fine, except when I try and use the next button to see the rest of the listing. Instead of seeing the rest of the listing, I see the paragraph of text after the code sample! It is like the rest of the code listing was chopped off. Now if I shrink the font size, I can then see more of the listing though. Has anyone else seen this problem? I also see the same thing on the PC reader as well. I've emailed the author, but have not heard back yet. I've now gone through the first 3 chapters in the book, and I must say I do like Petzold's style of writing. I have another WPF book which goes into a lot of theory from the start. I'm a nuts and bolts kind of person, so having code examples first with explanations is the best way for me to learn. Once I'm comfortable with the technology, then I can go into the theory deeper. I think Petzold strikes a good balance. There has been a lot of criticism about no pictures in the book. This doesn't really bother me, since Petzold has said he wants the reader to go through and try the examples. Why fill up excess pages with images you can see on your computer monitor if you run the program? So overall a good book, but the bad code formatting problem on the kindle detracts from a fine book.[Tim]

I think that Petzold was reading my mind when he wrote this book. I don't like XML, and I don't like "cheating" with XAML when you can write good clean C#. The first half of this book is entirely C# programming in WPF. I am using this book to help me write an abstraction layer above WPF. That simply would not be possible with XAML, which in my opinion places the design of the application at too low of a level. Petzold leaves no stone unturned, and whenever something seems weird, he doesn't ask us to trust him that it makes sense; he explores it in depth for us. I can't imagine that many other authors go through that kind of trouble when they're writing on tight deadlines. Petzold tells it how it is, and he includes the "why." Therefore, I recommend this book to anyone who strives to become a bit of an expert in WPF, not just a get-the-job-done programmer. I would consider this an advanced book at times because I find myself reading and re-reading sections to understand it. The explanation is there, but it's not trivial, and with so many pages in the book already, there is no room to be wordy.

If you like "old-school" learning, where you first learn to code WPF in pure C#, then learn XAML, this is your book.Charles Petzold is know for really explaining what is going on, with a calibrated sequence of code examples. It is best if you take your time reading this book, as you will miss a lot by speed reading it.There are more modern WPF books, but this one gets the basics right. So read this one first.

It's a great book if you a looking for a broad view on Korean history. It doesn't dwell on details, mainly during ancient and medieval eras, but is well accomplished when dealing with more recent events.

This is an excellent primer on Korean history. It is clear and concise in presenting such events and provides an excellent Korean perspective on the events while acknowledging other possible perspectives.

Like: a comprehensive history, clearly organized. Chronologically oriented.Dislike: a bit dry. The maps could have been better. It is, as part of the "Essential Series," in line and quite good.

For a Korean history book it is very good doesn't go too deep but doesn't really leave you wanting to know more, recommended

A concise history book that was perfect for my Korean history class

Good information but doesn't go into deep detail.Reading was significantly hindered by writing that was slightly pretentious and sometimes difficult to understand; I've had no issue reading other texts for any of my classes, but I found myself going back occasionally and rereading passages because of poor sentence structure and/or redundant use of vocabulary. (Why use the word "capitulated" instead of "surrendered"? It makes no sense.)

Analects, in case you were wondering, are "selected passages from the writings of an author.” I mention this definition here because it seems that the only time we use the term “analects” is when we consider the writings of Confucius. Was there once a larger corpus of writings from Confucius, and is what we have today distilled from some larger body of work? If so, then I wish we had that entire larger body of philosophical work, the same way we have a good many books from classical Greek philosophers like Plato and Aristotle; but that being said, I certainly am glad that we have the Analects as a distillation of Confucius’ philosophy. His Chinese name was K’ung Fu-tzu, 孔夫子, and the Latinate name that he bears today was probably bestowed by Jesuit missionaries to China in the 16th century. By any name, however, Confucius is a great philosopher who speaks to us today just as clearly as he spoke to the people of Chinese antiquity. He lived a long time ago – when he died in 479 B.C., the Spartan defense of Thermopylae had taken place just one year before – but it is astonishing how current and relevant his words and ideas remain.“Analects” is, of course, a Latin- and Greek-derived term; in Chinese, the book is è«–èªÅ¾,the "Lun Yü." It is divided into 20 books, and contains a total of 512 Confucian sayings, most of them quite short. On this re-reading of "The Analects," I encountered some sayings that were already familiar to me: e.g., “To say you know when you know, and to say you do not when you do not, that is knowledge” (II.17, p. 65). Yet on this reading, I learned many things that I found new.Perhaps because I’ve been reading a good deal of classical Greek philosophy lately, I found some striking parallels between Confucius and the Greeks who wrote sometime after him. For instance, when “The Master said, ‘Barbarian tribes with their rulers are inferior to Chinese states without them’” (III.5, p. 67), it made me think of how the ancient Greeks considered any non-Greek-speaking society to be βάρβαροι, barbaroi, barbarians. I found myself thinking of the doomed tragic heroes of ancient Greek drama, men and women brought down by their tragic flaws, when I heard Confucius reflect that “In his errors a man is true to type. Observe the errors and you will know the man” (IV.7, p. 73).Confucius knows that his disciples aspire to government service in the bureaucracy of the Empire – hence the prevalence of sayings in which Columbus offers advice such as, “Do not worry because you have no official position. Worry about your qualifications. Do not worry because no one appreciates your abilities. Seek to be worthy of appreciation” (IV.14, p. 74),Additionally, in an acutely status-conscious society, Confucius’ listeners are very interested in what will help them achieve the distinction of “gentleman.” With considerable focus on the value of benevolence, Confucius suggests that “The gentleman understands what is moral. The small man understands what is profitable” (IV.16, p. 74). And in one of my favorite passages from the Analects, Confucius remarks that “the gentleman hates to dwell downstream for it is there that all that is sordid in the Empire finds its way” (XIX.20, p. 155).Readers who are interested in the Judeo-Christian philosophical and moral tradition may be struck by the ways in which Confucius disagrees with one of the primary moral imperatives of Christianity. In contrast with Lao Tzu, who in the "Tao Te Ching" tells his disciples to “do good to him who has done you an injury”, Confucius says, “What, then, do you repay a good turn with? You repay an injury with straightness, but you repay a good turn with a good turn” (XIV.34, p. 129). In other words, the only thing you owe to someone who has wronged you is straightness, directness, honesty. For Western readers, many of whom have been raised in the tradition of “whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also” (Matthew 5:39), this may be the most challenging passage in the entire "Analects."At the same time, Confucianism invokes the Golden Rule in a way similar to all the other great moral, philosophical, and religious systems of the world. In response to a disciple’s asking, “Is there a single word which can be a guide to conduct throughout one’s life?”, Confucius replies, “Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire” (XV.24, p. 135).Perhaps because it is the dawn of a presidential election year here in the United States of America, I found that I was particularly interested in one particular example of Confucius’ advice to his disciples: “Be sure to go carefully into the case of the man who is disliked by the multitude. Be sure to go carefully into the case of the man who is liked by the multitude” (XV.28, p. 136). Good advice in the state of Lu during the Zhou dynasty, and good advice in any modern nation nowadays.I had this edition of "The Analects" with me when my wife and I were traveling in Beijing, home of the second largest Confucian temple in the world. Walking in the Forbidden City, my copy of "The Analects" in my jacket pocket, I wondered how many readers, imperial or otherwise, referred to their own copy of this book while traveling between and among the buildings of this most impressive city-within-a-city.This edition of "The Analects" includes a glossary of names and places mentioned in the book, an appendix on events in the life of Confucius, a textual history of the book, and a chronology of Confucius’ life. Particularly helpful is another appendix, one that describes the characters of the different disciples with whom Confucius speaks in the Analects. For readers of Confucius’ time, and indeed for followers of Confucianism nowadays, the differences in character among disciples like Tzu-kung, Tzu-lu, and Yen Yüan would be as self-evident as the differences in personality that Christians see among Saint Peter, Saint John, and Saint Thomas in the New Testament. This Penguin Books edition of Confucius’ "Analects" is a very fine way to acquaint, or reacquaint, oneself with one of the most important books ever written.

I own the Oxford World's Classics edition translated by Raymond Dawson. This was my first reading of 'The Analects' and while it was not quite what I expected, as it does not contain a truly coherent philosophy or even a consistent mode of presentation or authorship, it was nevertheless an incredibly rewarding study. And I say study rather than read because while it is quite brief (82 pages) there are a wealth of "chapters" that will leave you pondering--in a good way! If you are worried about the stereotype of vaguess and aloofness in Chinese sages, you needn't fear 'The Analects'. The main thing that can obscure some of the "chapters" is their reliance on Chinese history and most of these are briefly cleared up in Dawon's notes. 'The Analects' can be picked up and put down at a whim due to the informal structure and you will never feel that you lost the flow of it should a few days pass between readings. While I can't compare it to another translation or the Chinese, I found Dawson's translation to be very smooth and highly consistent throughout, and he supplements the introduction with helpful notes on his translation of key terms. This is an edition primarily for the newcomer rather than the scholar (not to say it is in anyway "dumbed down") as it is wonderfully concise in its introduction and notes, never saying more than needs to be said. However, in my case, I certainly wouldn't have minded more scholarship and context. Dawson uses Pinyin rather than Wade-Giles, which is a welcome shift in my eyes, as Wade-Giles often feels overwrought even if it sometimes comes closer to the true pronunciation, and there is a nifty conversion chart included in this edition. This edition like all of the newer Oxford World's Classics is neatly designed with a beautiful cover and good quality paper.

Confucius - The Analects is a rather intriguing book since it aims to tackle information regarding the well known Confucius in a cogent manner. The book is laid out in a fairly straight forward approach with no frills that's an extremely quick read.Within the introductory section, there is some background material featured, while a tad later on the book features notes on particular translations that the book offers. Knowing how complex translations can be, it's a well-thought out approach to delineate what the book means by each translated term, instead of assuming that the reader will know. Not only that, but also, certain words have various meanings, so to be able to narrow down with precision what was stated is greatly appreciated. For individuals seeking veritable gems of Confucius, this book has dozens of them.Reading this book will certainly help the individual realize how the culture was at the time, and why the information presented here was so vital to the upbringing and society in ancient China. The totality of the book is seamlessly interwoven to give you everything you need for comprehension, while not an iota more. This certainly helps since other books can be longwinded at times.Taking all into account the book definitely belongs in the libraries of individuals who value such knowledge with resounding depth. Confucius was definitely a master of his craft, and this book exemplifies that quite trenchantly.

I am one of the unfortunate people who has severe reflux. Most days I would have a constant feeling of burning in my chest and throat, could only sleep propped up, and sometimes would have to try and sleep sitting up. Ugh! I am working with a doctor to try and figure out why this problem is so bad and to see what can be done, if anything, to fix it. My quality of life has been so bad that I started researching what kind of foods I can eat and what foods I shouldn't eat. That is how I came upon this book. It sounded good and figured I had nothing to lose, so I purchased it. Best decision I could have made! This book changed the quality of my life. I started the meal plan and within 3 days was able to cut back on acid blockers. After two weeks on this meal plan, I was able to eat, in small doses, some foods that are known reflux triggers for me. For the most part, now that I'm feeling so much better, I am finding that I do not even want to eat the things that make me feel so sick.I will continue to work with my doctor to try and figure out why I have such bad reflux, but at least now I feel and sleep much better and can make smart decisions about what to put in my mouth. I am so happy I found this book! Thank you!!

I have acid and bile relfux - silent reflux. PPI meds don't work and actually made the situation worse. I take Carafate, Gaviscon Advance, Aloe Vera, Ginger Chews, I avoid the typical trigger foods and I plan my weekly meals around this cook book. My family has enjoyed all of the recipes I've made, which are 5 or 6 of them so far. I'm glad I can have meals that contain sauces and gravies that are low fat and made with minimal ingredients. The fish sauce, soy sauce, dijon mustard, cumin, thyme, chicken broth and non fat dairy are all the flavors needed to make tasty dishes. You'll be making things from scratch, but it is not difficult at all. I'm glad I took a chance with this cookbook. - Mrs. J

This book is so far from low Acid friendly if you are trying to heal from GERD or LPR. It mig work for people who have other conditions such as IC, but definitely not someone who needs to do a strict low Acid diet. I'm very disappointed as Dr. Kauffman references this author several times in her book, which is supposed to be for those of us who suffer from terrible symptoms of GERD

My husband has GERD and so I bought this cookbook to try. We have tried four recipes and so far they are all delicious. I mean REALLY good!Simple prep and good directions. The weekly shopping lists left me scratching my head at the end of the week and the way the recipes are organized is confusing (lots of flipping pages back and forth) but the food is very good.

This book is no different than any other healthy cook book. A lot of the recipes include known trigger foods and ingredients. I’m sending my copy back ASAP!

This is such a great plan and wonderful recipes. My husband and I both suffer from time to time with acid reflux. The doctors always prescribe priolosec which work but not something that we want to stay on. I figured we would try changing our diet and found this book. We followed the two week plan pretty darn close and by the end of the two weeks both of us could feel changes. I even lost a a few pounds. The final weekend we splurged with a few beers and a slightly richer meal. Had a little heartburn but nothing significant and it didn't last long. From that point on, we've been using the recipes through the week for maintenance and splurge on weekends a bit. I have not had heartburn for weeks. It certainly goes to show how much food affects us. Prior to finding this book, I cooked a lot with garlic, butter, tomatoes, pepper, onions, cheese, ate a lot of mandarins, chocolate, drank orange juice and many other things that really do cause us to have digestive problems. The recipes in the book use olive oil, lemon zest, thyme , salt and other seasonings and they are really delicious. I don't feel like I'm dieting at all. Just cooking differently and paying attention to acidic foods. With so many recipes, it's easy to use this book on a daily basis for breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner. Highly recommend giving this a try. Who knew cooking with alternative seasonings would taste so good!

This book is very informative and the recipes are pretty good. I learned alot from this book and I encourage GERD suffers to purchase this. One thing I learned is that even though citrus is a big no no the zest is not, so you can still have the flavor without the acid. There are some recipes that you might have to wait on till your Gerd is under control but the recipes I've seen are all low acid. Dairy is one of them but they recommended using lowfat but better yet fat free dairy. Different things trigger reflux in each individual so the thing is if it's a trigger stay away. I have reflux and my dad just went to the hospital for a bleeding ulcer and this book has helped us both tremendously!

This book has been a life-saver! If has good information in it, and the recipes are great! They're easy, with fresh/easy-to-find ingredients, can be prepared in a reasonable amount of time, and they are delicious! I've made several meals from this book and they were all hits. I highly recommend this.

Apparently this is one of those math programs you have to start at the beginning. After some research on various websites, blogs, etc. I determined that Level C is roughly third grade level. After getting the book I was a bit disappointed in the amount of second grade math it actually contains. It's really a bit of an odd mixture of second and third grade math. After going over a good deal of the book on my own I discovered it contains things we missed as well as more new stuff then I realized initially. Overall it is working out for my son; he considers the other stuff a review. Aside from the levels the company uses being confusing, my reason for low stars is the quality of the book. Please make note of the fact this is a work text with perforated pages that tear out very easily. The paper itself is a thin poor quality newspaper like material, so please be aware it will tear easily. It will not stand up to much erasing. It doesn't copy well either because of the thinness of the paper. If your child is prone to frequent mistakes while doing math, invest in a cheap notebook to have you or your child copy the problems and work them out. It's not a bad program at all, it will meet our needs and I will probably use the rest in the series, I just wish I'd known how it's set up so I could have started with level A a couple of years ago. If you choose MCP Mathematics for your child(ren) toss out your ideas of grade level mathematics and start with Level A.

The MCP math series works well for my children. I really appreciate it being workbook style so in our busy life I am not having kids lose book PLUS papers or notebooks...etc. All the material is together & nicely bound! The book is strong in critical thinking. The word problems help the child see how these math concepts really work in real life. Every new concept has a few teaching pages, several practice problem pages, about 2 solid pages of word problems (I find I need to sit down w/my child and help them through these 2 pages,as trying to do it by themselves has been a frustration for them although once we worked together they fully enjoyed it) and then the last part is a couple pages of review/tests. I use this series from Kindergarten (book K) through grade 6 (books "A through "F".) I don't use the teachers manuals in the kindergarten (K) or in books A & B. After that I find the manuals very helpful to explain some concepts as well as for quick and easy correcting. Excellent!(As an aside: since MCP press doesn't label books: First Grade, Second Grade etc.(typical 1st grade is Book A, typical 2nd book B and so on....), you can use the correct level for your child without getting hung up on someone else's ideas about where a child should be at a certain age.)

I found out about this book spotting a woman dragging around a bunch of kids with textbooks to the dentist, sure enough she was homeschooling, and she told me to get this book from Christian Supply. It's easier to get my 2nd copy (to replace the one I gave to my teacher) on Amazon. It covers all the basics, plus some of the goofy games they play on those new fangled state tests like WASL.The homework I get from my public school is pretty awful, it's either way too easy, or way too hard, or it's really hard but doesn't teach any math. Any one of the worksheets in these books is easy to do in 10 minutes and teaches just what you need to know. None of this cut out 56 cards and spend 2 hours playing how to add 10 or subtract 10 with your entire family nonsense. The grade 3 covers multiplication with decimal points, square root on calculators, how to add X of item A, Y of item B, etc. by mixing multiply and add, and how to create a table for guess and check, plus measurement. This book is a half-inch thick and tells you everything you need to know in 3rd grade. Dale Seymour's "Investigations" is 2 feet worth of books that you can't write on that doesn't teach you how to carry or do long division, but you do get to sing "Happy Birthday" in two languages.Chances are, your school district has adopted one of the half dozen National Science Foundation "fuzzy" or "standards based" math texts that deliberately won't even show you how to add, multiply or divide without the use of a calculator or a number chart. The worksheets my teacher was handing out from who knows where were even worse. If you supplement you kids with these, you'll have a good idea of what's normal for 3rd grade, and what good homework should look like. If everybody got worked up and bought this and showed this to their teachers and principal, we wouldn't have to deal with terrible math books.Arthur Hu 2000 candidate for Washington State Superintendent of Public Instruction and grass roots education activist.

Love these books for younger learners. My daughter did 8 pages in one sitting and had a blast.

We like it.

My eldest son thrived while using this math workbook. It isn't overwhelming as my children have complained about Saxon Math workbooks, and it is fun. All of my children that have used this workbook have tested higher than first grade level on their annual reviews. Our youngest child will be using this workbook this year. I highly recommend it.

We homeschool and this math curriculum is great for elementary years. It get's right to the point and does a pretty good job of being clear in it's explanation.

I love all grades of MCP math. Excellent set up, excellent lessons.
