Review

"A word about the show's catalog: It's one of the best I've ever seen. Its size (generous, but not clumsily large), weight (hefty but not uncomfortable), fonts, paper, interior images and cover illustration (a 1968 work on paper by Hesse that gracefully sums up the show's premise) are just about perfect. The essays—by the show's curator, Veronica Roberts; art historian Kirsten Swenson; and Ms. Lippard, the veteran critic—are informative and argot-free. . . . The 'Converging Lines' catalog should be a model for museum publications to come."—Peter Plagens, Wall Street Journal"Eva Hesse and Sol LeWitt were the closest of friends, their bond informing much of their work. A new book, Converging Lines, chronicles their kinship through personal photos, affectionate letters and . . . postcards from across the globe."—T: The New York Times Style Magazine"Historians have made much of the influence of conceptualist Sol Lewitt on artist Eva Hesse, but this book—and its corresponding exhibition—effortlessly proves that this inspiration went both ways."—Publishers Weekly"The exhibition is accompanied by an excellent catalogue co-published by the Blanton and Yale University Press. It reproduces not only numerous works by the two artists, but marvelous examples of their correspondence."—Tyler Green, Modern Art Notes

Excellent account of the artists development and influence on one another. Great to read about their processess

nice but not my fav

All too often the influence artists have on each other is lost or under reported in retrospectives examining their life's work. This book and the exhibit that prompted it is a gem because its focus is on the friendship of two trailblazing modern artists and the influence Sol and Eva had on each other. As explained in the beautifully written chapters of this book, Eva's tragic death was truly a turning point in Sol's creative life and propelled him to a richer, more varied and nuanced body of work. Their postcards and letters to each other that are included are also a moving example of how to sustain and nurture friendships throughout the power of the written word; itself a vanishing art form in today's world of Facebook, Twitter and Texting. Richly enhanced with a unique and rewarding chronological timeline of their lives, maps of where they lived and photographs of rarely seen works.

Had a chance to see this sublime exhibit on a recent trip to Austin during SXSW and got the catalogue as a keepsake. The production quality is beautiful but more importantly it really brings to life the gorgeous, thoughtful exhibit, reminding us all not only of the profound artistic influence Sol LeWitt and Eva Hesse had on one another in setting a new course for conceptual art but the friendship, mutual admiration and charming correspondence at its root. If you can make it to Austin, don't miss the show. If you can't, don't miss the catalogue.

The exhibition and this accompanying publication are exquisite and revelatory. Curator Roberts has shown her deft skill as a researcher and organizer, and each catalogue essayist has brought something important to bear on our understanding and perception of these two artists, both as individuals and as friends and significant influences one upon the other. This is particularly notable, as Roberts reveals very well the influence Hesse had on LeWitt, a significant insight that has not been well explored in the textured histories previously written about these two artist friends.A must read for all who enjoy Hesse and LeWitt's work.

Peter Plagen's mention of the catalogue in his WSJ article about the show ([...]) says it much better than I could:"A word about the show's catalog: It's one of the best I've ever seen. Lippard, the veteran critic—are informative and argot-free."
