About the Author
Hayao Miyazaki is one of Japan's most beloved animation directors. Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. Sugoi, sugoi, sugoi.This is an exceptional book, especially for Totoro / Miyazaki fans. There are so many vivid and wonderful pictures in the (hardcover) book, I can't believe what a great value it is. Story books with this many pages, pictures, and iconic art normally cost WAY more.We love Totoro, the movie (original Fox english dubbed version or original japanese language track), and this has been an exceptional addition to our Totoro and Hayao Miyazaki collection. This picture book follows the movie story line faithfully and with so many pages, you never feel like it's leaving anything out or taking any shortcuts.
Omg! This book is wonderful!! Beautiful illustrations on EVERY page! My 5 year old is going to freak when he opens this for Xmas. This will for sure be his new favorite nighttime book. I can't wait to see the Howls moving castle book I ordered a couple days ago.
I actually have the book from the movie! And I do read this to my daughter too who's not even a year and a half yet! I can't recommend this book any more than saying it's the best book ever, it's absolutely my daughter's favorite movie and book what else can I say? Thank you Hayao Miyazaki!!! Totoro and friends is magical and all children should get a chance to meet him!
Our 3 year old loves the movie My Neighbor Totoro. It was the first movie we took her to in the theater. This book is a great alternative when you don't want to watch the movie over and over and over (as we have, though it's adorable so I can't complain). The pictures are taken directly from the movies scenes and the story is almost identical down to some of the thing the characters say. There's a map of the village and an explanation of each character (which is great when granma is visiting and hasn't seen the movie). It's are first longer book and it's fun to bookmark and read more the next night. Highly recommended for Totoro fans!
It seems really, really hard to sum up an entire film (especially one this good) in a children's book of this length. This version does it perfectly. It tells everything it needs to, and somehow doesn't seem to leave out anything important. The pictures are all straight from the film, no cheesy reproductions. There's a little map, and character descriptions, and so forth. So if someone is really into the film and wants a bit more perspective, it provides that. Wonderful book.
Okay, so the movie is WAY better than the book. However, upon my 4 year old daughter's request we read it EVERY night. She can nearly recite the entire book and is learning how to read from such a fabulous story of two sisters and the bond of a family and magic of the natural world.
This book is adorable. I bought it to read to my son, and the pictures are just beautiful. It is a little bit long, but has short "chapter" sections, so it's easy to stop and start again later if needed. It also has a nice little introduction to the characters in the beginning and a map of the locations at the end.
This was a present nfor my daughter, she loved it, is so cute, awesome pictures, this was a great gift.
The book is great. After my toddler gets a bath, he and Mom sit and read this book. After about a month of that, we went on a trip. As a treat at the end of the day, we put the movie on for him.He was transfixed. He would point out thing he remembered from reading it. It was a wonderful evening.It's an odd story, sure. But I think it is perfect for young imaginations. It is also perfect for adults too... You get swept up in the wonderful story and it is so much fun.
