Full disclosure, the car in the photo on the cover is an MGB, a British sports car produced from 1962 through 1980. I love old British sports cars, and I own a 1980 MGB.Confessions out of the way, I can say that I don't own an old car so that I have something to polish. I love to drive my car. So I am always on the lookout for guidebooks that might reveal a new "must see" town or village, or big city attraction unknown to me. Or perhaps a back road that calls like Ulysses' Sirens.A previous reviewer complained the book did not list every route in the country. That would require an encyclopedia. The book does offer road trips in each of the 50 states. Often several. As someone recently relocated to New England there was much for me to learn about my new home state, Massachusetts, but also the region. Looking at places that I have lived in the past, including Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and Florida, there were some new routes as well as old favorites. Some of the trips are well known like the AlCan Highway or California's Highway 101. Some are in the tour guides like Hawaii's "Road to Hana". And some are known only within particular groups, like the Tail of the Dragon, popular with motorcyclists and sports car drivers.The book goes far beyond the US and Canada, listing trips in Australia, South Africa, well on every continent except Antarctica. And the photographs may have you thinking, "I should do that."Whether it's adding to your "Bucket List" or simply whiling away a few long, dark Winter hours fantasizing about open roads, blue skies and new to you vistas, this is a great book.Have a good trip!
What a fun tour of the world. Road trips from everywhere...just leafing through the pages is a trip. I loved getting this book.
Very comprehensive
I bought this book because I though the subject matter would be interesting. First off, it doesn't cover all roads in the US. However, it also does describe popular routs in other countries through out the world. However, it did have quite a bit of road trips. I just wish they would have produced it in a full 8 1/2 x 11. That way they could have made the writing a little larger. They could have also added a little more information (maps, routs, etc). Instead of just a general written description of the rout. The pictures are nice but they do not do a lot to sell interest in the trips. I would suggest separating this subject matter into US Road Trips, European Road Trips, etc.
Worth its weight in paper alone. book is heavy!
Cool book with a lazy editor... at least three photo captions are blatantly wrong:1. Pacific Coast Highway. The photo is of Willow Creek bridge and beach, not Bixby.2. Big Sur's Old Coast Road. The photo is of the road/driveway to the New Camaldoli Hermitage on the south coast, not the Old Coast Road.3. Kamehameha V Highway. This photo is taken on the north shore of OAHU, not Molokai. It's an easy mistake to make for a lay person -- the road to Haleiwa is called the Kamehameha Highway (note: no V), and I suppose Halawa and Haleiwa might be confused -- but a decent fact checker or editor should've caught that.Just got the book this afternoon as a bday present, and while it's fun to browse and is certainly stoking my wanderlust, I definitely wouldn't use this as a reference.
This makes a great coffee table book. And if you're ever getting the itch to go somewhere this book gives you the world to choose from. The descriptions are enough to stimulate your imagination and get you going. Well selected pictures to give you a feel for the area too. I love the links with google maps that make it easy to dig into any one of the trips and flesh it out in detail. I picked it up at the library but I decided I need to have it - even though its rather massive and we're trying to pare down our book collection.
I was surprised at the number of roads that I have checked off and really excited to check out some of the routes that I discovered. Time to go adventuring!
